Crunching sound on sharp turns

I have a crunching sound on sharp right and left turns. It doesn't sound like CV joints. I suspect it is the strut bearings. Do you have to take the struts off to replace those? My struts are in good shape and the car rides like a magic carpet. I don't want to replace the struts if they aren't broken.

Yep, drop the whole strut and spring and then compress the spring and use an impact on the center nut and you're pretty much done

^^^ Thank you. I was afraid of that. I may have to pay Harbor Freight a visit for a spring compressor.
