Help identify this sound. Exhaust manifold?

Car already needs a new exhaust and is pretty loud. Then this sound appeared a few days ago. Is it the exhaust manifold? Video below

I had something very similar to that (maybe exactly the same even) a while back; it scared the sh*t out of me. but it lessened and went away after several days of driving after putting some tcw3 in the fuel. I suspected it was an injector being weird and super extra loud.

let us (me) know whatever you determine it is. thanks.

Does the sound change when you stuff a rag in the tailpipe (don't burn yourself)? If not, it's not an exhaust noise.

The audio sounded more like a tapping!

If it does change, it might be that manifold riser tube that usually gets clogged in these 4th Gens. Maybe, now it's perf'd from corrosion.

It definitely sounds like a very loud tapping. I'll try the tailpipe tomorrow.

I had the codes from CEL done and I got:

P1147 EVAP Control system purge flow malfunction
P0400 EGR system function
P1335 crankshaft position reference sensor circuit malfunction
P1335 crankshaft position reference sensor circuit malfunction

Would any of these cause this loud tapping? I disconnected all the fuel injectors and the sound remained.

I wish I could hear the sound link you left on my phone, but I cannot.

Is the tapping coming from inside the timing cover or from one of the valve covers.

Is the sound louder when the car is warm or cold?

Is it always there, or is it intermittent?

Which weight oil are you using, and is the oil level where it should be?

You might try to loosen or remove the serpentine belt to eliminate the ac ,alt, and tensioner as being the cause. Also check the integrity of the main pully- harmonic balancer.

^ questions from JvG and Quinton

How many miles does it have on the engine?

When I'm looking for an engine knock or tapping sound, I use a automotive stethoscope like the one in the picture to isolate the source.

A failing timing chain tensoner may allow chain slack to slap against the upper chain guide. I've experienced that noise being transmitted across the top of the engine in a way that made it sound like it was coming from around the intake manifold.

It took an automotive stethoscope to isolate the noise source and to determine the noise was actually originating from under the timing chain cover.

Like CS_AR suggested, a stethoscope helps you narrow down the area to where the sound is most likely coming from. Can save you a lot of shooting in the dark disassembly.

In a clutch, I use a long screwdriver and place the tip in where I think the noise is coming from. I wrap my hand around the handle and have my thumb over the end bent at the high point bend on. I put my ear to the high point bend of my thumb and listen around to figure out what's happening where. JUST make sure no clothing or hair can get pulled into pulleys or belts!

Hope this helps you figure out exactly where the problem is, rather than throwing parts and money at maybes. But the first money that won't be a waste, will be a stethoscope! Internal engine clanking presents via many paths, so knowing exactly where it's coming from is a journey sometimes.

May your journey be swift! And BTW, it doesn't sound like an easy fix.

I sure hope I'm wrong!
