small dent on hood by support lift - how??

Hi all:

I was cleaning up a bit in the engine bay and noticed that near the support lift attachment points on the underside of the hood, there is a small dent on one side, and a scratched up area on the other. The supports have been replaced twice before. One time by the dealer to swap out original OEM supports for new OEM supports, and then a second time by the dealer to swap out the replacement OEM supports for StrongArm 4524 aftermarket supports since the OEM ones are so expensive and didn't seem to last. Other than that, the current supports were removed twice by body shops. I've never done the job and am trying to figure out why there are these dents and scuff marks and when/how it happened. Are the OEM one really hard to remove such that the first dealer pried them off? Did it happen when the body shop temporarily removed the StrongArms? I know it will never show or really matter but it is disappointing "professionals" caused this.

These are easy to change. Available for cheap on Amazon.

Instructions are avaluable on this forum. Also on the net, or on you tube.

There is no reason to take the car to a shop, let alone a dealer. You could have done this yourself several times now. You wound up paying someone to mess up your car.

Be willing to take a little risk now and then.

If the studs the hydraulic lifts attach to on the hood side are stripped and moving. (Most likely).......

You either need new studs or if the hood threads are also stripped, need to heli-coil, or better yet, Time-Sert the threaded area and install new studs to stop any movement.

Grab the strut by the hood (opened all the way) and shake it around to see if the stud is moving. If not, maybe the dealer did the damage when swapping the old ones out. If they are stripped, Thank the dealer as well. This is why so many of us do as much of our own work as possible.

Hope this helps!

This is the very reason I hate going to the dealer or any mechanic. This is a simple job to do and there is a lot of helps on the net. Good luck in doing future work yourself. You will feel better and have a sense of accomplishment. We are here to help.
