California State Law question

Due to being new into the area, I have been told that my tinted windows in my car are illegal in the state of CA.

ALSO- I was at a stoplight and a guy in the next lane said HEY, What is that on your windshield. He was refering to my V1, I said its a radar detector, he said, are they legal here, I said I did not know.

Does anyone know ????

Radar detectors = legal in CA

Tint = (any) is illegal on the driver or passenger front/side windows. Otherwise you can tint the rear, and side-rears, in back of the driver/front passenger.

In So. Cal, two separate friends of mine got all their glass tinted & did the fronts in 35%, thinking they would be less likely to get hassled by the local law than if they went w/ 20% - both received fix-it tickets within 2 weeks of getting the tint done & had to get it removed.

(Both of these cars are "sleepers," btw - nothing drawing undue attention to either) Both of these guys strongly discourage local friends from tinting their fronts. (YMMV, of course). Cops don't have enough real crime to keep them busy around here. I'm thankful for that, I suppose.

Um, as far as I know you can only tint your rear windows and rear windshield, but not any of the front windows/windshield. The idea is that the cops should be able to see who they are pulling over, as a safety precaution.

As for radar detector, a couple years ago I tried to buy one for my dad (who I think speeds too much) and the dude at GoodGuys said they were not selling them because they were just made illegal by a new law. So from what I know, I think detectors are illegal too.

On the other hand, I've seen many cars with front tint and detectors, so I wouldn't worry about it unless you've got really dark tint and speed alot!

when u get sick of the traffic in so cal. come up north. its peaceful here.

radars are ok. scanners are ok. Jammers are not

Actually, California law was recently revised to allow for tint of a 70 rating or higher on the front doors... according to the local tint dealer in San Jose. Meaning that there must be at least 70% light transmission. But the windshield cannot be tinted at all.

According to the dealer I spoke to, it was a consolation made for drivers who have various sorts of light sensitivity issues with their eyes.

Front Windows: 84% (Basically nothing) is allowed according to the people that did my tint. I have 50% and haven't been harassed, but I know people who have 35% and got busted all the time. Basically if they can see into the car easily I think you will be fine unless you run into a *****.

Rear: Anything is allowed

Radar detector are legal anywhere on the west coast. I think the only states they are illegal in are Kentucky, and either (or both) Virgina and Maryland, and of course Washington DC.

Connecticut outlawed detectors several years ago, too. Not sure if the law was ever repealled, tho. . .

when you have questions that pertain to law, the best advice is to look it up for yourself. when you make an inquiry in a forum you will have various opinions on what the legality of a particular "subject" is. have some peace of mind and look it up. here's the link. you must have acrobat.

regarding window tint: read:
