Why can't you use the 4th Gen gear on the cam?

 

Thats the point of the cam adapters - to allow you to use the 3.0 cam gears (and therefore 3.0 ecu) with 3.5 cams.
The adapters do two things:

• Align the 3.0 cam gears with the rest of the timing chain components.
• Maintain proper position of the cam lobe center relative to the rest of the rotating assemblies.
