not to insult your intelligence at all, but did you press the little black release button? otherwise did you try starting the car again and then turning it off again? try it in neutral?

i do not have a little black release button, I've shifted gears and tried, tried it in neutral and took it for a small drive and then tried again =/

its acting as though the car is stuck in gear and it doesnt want to let go of the key

are you able to turn the key ALL the way into the off position? if it starts fine it doesnt sound like a neutral safety switch problem. give a little bang on the shifter forward, try turning the wheel while pulling the key, my brothers altima does this sometimes and he usually just wiggles the wheel and key while he pulls the key.

my friend had a similar problem.....

while your car is in park, push the shifter up and at the same time, turn the key and it should come out, worked for my friend...hopefully it does for you.

the little black release button is only in 5spds, try pushing your shifter up with some force and turning the key

it mosly likely is ur shifter, somehow u banged it in some way that its not where it shuold be. like the other guys on the forum, ur shifter is too low, take a screwdriver n just remove the shifter, and you should be able to remove your key, otherwise, i have no clue

Key cannot be removed from ignition and shifter will shift anywhere at anytime.

After buying this 99 Nissan Maxima, battery kept going dead.had to unplug all fuse security boxes and light flashers to keep battery up. Never could remove key and shifter will shift anywhere, whenever you want to shift it . The button on shifter does not push in or move any , but shifter will still move anyway. Any help??? When I bought it, the alarm horn had already had fuse taken out. I just took out everything else...

Try to turn the steering wheel a bit in one direction as you simultaneously push the button and turn the key.

if that doesn't work turn the stewring wheel a bit in the opposite direction as you push the button and turn the key.
