limited slip diff

I apologize for my ignorance. I have a 1997 Maxima GLE. Does it have limited slip differential? And is that in the front axle?

If it's a US car, definitely not. The diff is in the front wheel drive transmission.

Dumb question, since these cars are FWD is the differential something that can be swapped or is it integral to the transaxle, ie to get a LSD you need to swap your transaxle with one that has LSD?

The differential in 95-00 5-speed VLSD transmissions is dimensionally different and the driver's side case half is different as a result. The VLSD diff id larger overall and has a larger driver's side bearing basically. A non-VLSD diff has the same or similar size bearings on each side.

With that said, Quaife makes LSD units that drop into non-LSD 5-speeds.
