Deferred Maintenance

Hey everyone

My 96 SE has been running ok but I’ve noticed the mpg has been going down the past few months, from around 24 mpg to 20 mpg. I decided to take the deep dive and get the fuel injectors rebuilt. I’ve had the car for over 20 years, second owner, it has 161000+ miles and never got them serviced. After I got the fuel injectors off I decided to go further and remove the LIM and fuel rail to clean them. I have a few questions that I hope some can help with.

- What’s the best way to clean the fuel rails, UIM, and LIM?

- I replaced the valve cover gaskets 5 years ago as well as the knock sensor, is it necessary to replace them again? I’ve put less than 15K since they were replaced and don’t see any oil leakage around the valve cover gaskets.

- I bought an EGR Valve a couple of years ago but never took the time to install it. I removed the old EGR Valve but had trouble removing the tube that connects it to the EGR Valve Control Solenoid. I had to turn the entire tube with the nut to remove it from the EGR Valve, is that how it should be or should the nut move freely? Can someone tell me what it’s called so I can order a replacement? see pic:

- I’m replacing the heater hoses, is it better to use silicone hoses as a replacement?

- What is the plastic part on the firewall called that connects the heater hoses? The original was so brittle it fell apart.

Thanks for any help

The broken plastic piece can be replaced with a 3/4" hose barb or get a hose from a newer 4th gen which is one piece and gets rid of that splice. It's a heater core hose.

The drop in gas mileage can be caused by old upstream oxygen sensors. My car improved from 24-27 mpg to we'll over 30 after I replaced them.
Use NTK sensors. They are equivilant to Nissan oem at a lower price.

All egr passages and tube's are probably clogged with carbon. I cleaned mine with round steel brushes from harbor freight. Also liquid carb cleaner.

Cleaning inside the manifolds can be done with engine cleaner or kerosene and a brush.
Yet they will just get dirty again soon. No need to bother cleaning.
