Keyless entry fob function rewire

Ok, forgive the title but I couldn't think of a short thing to call what I want to do (or at least am interested in learning about).
Does anyone know how the keyless entry fob buttons work electrically in the car? I mean, are the recieved and processed by a central unit that then farms out instructions to unlock/lock, pop trunk, panic alarm. The reason being.... I would like to rewire the panic alarm to do something else, and possibly the role down the window timer button. I think it would be cool if you could roll up the windows, or roll down the driver side front and back (how I use them when I drive) instead of both front (annoying cross currents mess up my do)
Anyway... I'm one of those guys that likes to do stuff just cuz it can be done so I thought I'd ask.

The only think I know is there is a control unit under the dash on the passenger side. I've only seen that you can change the code. I've never seen anything about changing the actually controls.

I have thought about doing the same thing. Unfortunately, unless you are willing to program a microcontroller to control these functions, you're out of luck!

You can use the panic alarm to do something else. The relay for the the panic or alarm can be used for something else, but the relay switches periodically....don't think that helps you very much unless you want to wire it to flash your lights.

Is it the relay itself that is switching (i.e. could be replaced with a steady state?)
