Any ECU differences for '96?
Any ECU differences for '96?
Hi folks, I have a 1996 Maxima GLE I want to replace the ECU in.
Ever since I got the vehicle at 200k, there's been a handful of codes I could never fix or get cleared (comes right back)-- one is an EGRC or some such code (EGR related), one is VSS speed sensor (though my speedo works fine), another is a serial data error code which comes and go as it pleases. I also have some random issues with it showing no fault codes on a scanner, when I know there are some there (CEL is illuminated). I once took the engine down to the lower intake and inspected everything in the EGR (per the FSM, everything checks out), checked the VSS, went through it all with a fine tooth comb and have come up empty. I'm thinking the ECU may be at fault. I do know according to service history that the ECU had been replaced immediately prior to me owning the car-- that ECU replacement was an attempt to fix a stalling issue and wasn't related to these codes. I'm not certain but I think these codes started appearing after that ECU replacement. So I'm thinking either the ECU is bad or they bent some pins or something when installing. For about $50 I can get a used ECU which is money well spent, even if it just knocks that possibility off the list.
Question is-- are there any different versions of this ECU I should be aware of, or do trim levels make a difference? Or can I just pick up any that is off a '96 with auto trans? I found one on Ebay with part no. A18-E66 EZ8, which is said to fit a '96 with 4 speed auto and federal emissions. Those particular attributes match my vehicle. Any way of knowing if this is the correct part? I'm hesitant to go off the part number on my own ECU, as the possibility exists that whoever replaced it may have used the wrong part.
Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

As far as I am aware, the ECU is swappable between 95-96, and also between 97-98, otherwise you will get some codes if you switch between a 96 and 98 for example. Trim levels do not matter to a certain extent, and neither does CA or Fed as far as I'm aware unless it is for 1999. (feel free to correct me on this).
IIRC CA and Fed spec vary slightly for O2 Sensor readings for emissions, and I believe the trims only mattered for a speed limiter, which GXE's came with that cut fuel at 120mph. Other trim levels are rare to have this, and finding out what trim level the ecu came from is difficult without actually pulling it out yourself from the car, unless the seller specifies.
If you want specifics on ECU pinouts, I found this: 1995-1999 4thgen Nissan Maxima ECU Pinouts (Detailed Comparison) (my4dsc.com)
TL;DR As long as it is 95 or 96 it will work. CA or Fed spec won't really matter, trim not so much.

Wow, I just lost about 4 hours of my life going through ECU model numbers trying to find one that matches mine. No idea why Nissan had to make this so complicated with so many part numbers.
As it stands, I have an A18C85EY1, which is said to be for '96 GXE w/out power drivers seat, no idea why that would matter. No mention of CA/Federal. Some sources say this ECU is for build dates to 10/95, other say it's for 11/95+.
I ended up purchasing a A18C83EN6 which I narrowed down to be for '95-96 (to 10/95 build date, mine is 05/95) Federal, AT, possibly for an I30, but I don't think that matters. I'll report back if this project goes belly up and I end up with a paperweight that's incompatible with my Max.

I swapped in the replacement A18-C83 EN6 ECU for my A18-C85 EY1.
No issues, everything appears normal. Replacing the ECU did solve a few of the phantom codes I was getting, specifically the one for VSS (speed) sensor, and the serial data error code. It also reads the codes everytime, instead of telling me there's no codes (despite a CEL) when I scan it. I still have 2 or 3 other codes that are persisting, but I assume those are legitimate ones that need fixed. Thanks for the help.
