4th gen manual transmission sourcing.
Not looking to buy one rn but possibly later, I was trying to look up pricing for them.
I havent visited any junkyards yet but looking around online I cant find any manual transmissions for sale for a 97 maxima. Are they hard to source online? My local (SE NC) pick n pull only has 3 4th gens on their inventory.

If you can find a fifth gen six speed manual to put in my '96 I'll trade you my five speed. 
But you can also check with LKQ. My brother just got a new (used) manual trans for his 1 series from them that we swapped in a couple weeks ago. They're a big company with a similarly large inventory of / access to second hand parts.

car-part.com will give you a list of wrecking yards across the country with the parts you're looking for.
Personally I'd hold out for a 6th gen or Altima 6 speed with the 4.1 Final Drive.
