Weight in car ??

The other night I was on the way to the mall with my friend who is 305 pounds. Im not making fun of him at all but when I went to race a grand am, the guy was pi**ing me off, I bearly won. We were dead even through my 1st gear then half way through second I slowly pulled away. I can feel a difference with him in the car but how much of a difference will I really feel 1/4 wise ??
Is my car jsut slow

Well u have a 5spd 96 and I have an auto 96 and i have beaten a grand am, by a lot. PLus also was it a grand am or grand prix? the Grand Prix GTP is a good race, very close. Anywyas back to ur question, yes, ur friend is hurting ur HP. Did the pontiac have anyone in the car? Extra people in ur car, ( or heavy subs) will hurt ur performance.

Hell yah 300+ pounds will make a difference. Your car only weighs about 3100 pounds. When your friend gets into the car, that's a 10% increase in weight. It probably won't translate into a 10% increase in 1/4 times, but it definetly WILL adversely affect performance to add 10% mass. So just imagine how your car will perform if you strip out 10% of the weight.

Thats the same reason why people with big subwoofer boxes etc are slower. More weight = less go.

Acceleration has to do with weight and as all racecar tuners know, your power to weight ratio should be high to low. 300lbs is a lot of weight and will drastically impede your acceleration.
