my friend has a 2001 VW GTI 1.8T 5spd and i have a 95 auto max with CAI and muffler and we raced last weekend....first from like 10-60 we tied and then from the line he killed me but i was starting to catch up around 55-60 but we stopped...has ne one else raced a GTI??

 

ive raced VR6's on the fly and get beat by them most of the time as for 1.8's ill leave them for the Civics.

i havent raced a 1.8T gti, but my friends vr6 gti ran a 14.9 in 95degree weather..

i think hes got an intake and a chip.

I raced a 97 gti 1.8l yesterday, owned by a guy I work with. His was a 5spd, exhaust, cai. The race was not close. Off the line he beat me a bit, but once we got to about 60 or so I ate him up. I hit 120 and had close to a 10 car lead. I have a 97 max, auto, cai, y, cat back.

You only raced him to 60...thats the meat of your engine you shut down

 

You guys are getting your years mixed up. Prior to this year, 1.8t was rated at 150 hp (actually made more like 165-170, they put 145 to the wheels stock). The new VR6 is rated at 201 hp. Either way, I'm not surprised you lost to him. They are a faster car than a stock or bolt on max auto.

 

HP numbers mean nothing when talking about VW. Everyone knows they underrate the 1.8T The VR6 is more expensive, but the 1.8 outperforms it...do you think they want people buying the less expensive engine? Hell no, so we underrate it. 1.8T is the faster of the two.

The torque convertor on your auto is just killing you off the line. There really isn't much you can do about it, except for a tranny conversion, or a trade in for a manual.
