Pulling a junkyard engine with Trans attached?

Hey guys,

I found a Maxima in the yard today with a 5spd and one of my long term goals with my 97 I30 is to swap a stick into it. So, I am going to grab this transmission. I am not allowed to use jacks in the pull it yard so getting a tans jack under it is a no go, they are on stands. Is it pretty easy to pull the who engine and trans out together after disconnecting anything and then just removing the transmission from the engine outside the car. They have engine pullers so that is not an issue.

My plan is to get this manual trans inspected and if needed rebuilt before I put it on my car.

Might consider this, So much of the sourcing work has already been done: https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...ion-parts.html

Too bad you live on the other side of the country!

I've never removed both at one time from the top. If I had to guess I'd say it's possible, but probably very tight. Having a load balancer so you could tweak the angles would probably make things a lot easier.

I will say that I've never had good luck using a trans jack on these cars. I've found it's much easier to just do it all manually since it's a tight squeeze and you need to be able to adjust the angle of the trans too much, which is too difficult when using a jack.

Why pull the engine if you don't want it? Is the vehicle high enough to drop the trans and slide it out? You don't need a jack, gravity does the work.

Your right JSutter. I went back today and started pulling the drive shafts and coolant lines. The trans looks easy to get out from underneath. The car is fairly high

Don't remove the clutch lines.
You should buy an aftermarket one piece stainless steel clutch line instead. Some people just use a length of brake line.

the factory setup is needlessly complicated. It's also a PITA to bleed. Just remove the master and slave cylinders.
