Any issues I need to watch for

I got a lead on a 1999 GLE. Know a guy.

Im scratching through the threads but figure I would ask:

Anything I need to know about these cars, any common issues or points/tips out of the ordinary I need to watch out I would appreciate it.

Location in your profile might be better for YOU when asking questions. There's a lot of information in that one thing!

How many miles and so far what big things have been done to the car? At this point from age alone, never mind miles, many things should have been done for the car to be "Well Maintained".

Do you rely on mechanics for maintenance, or do you have the ability to do your own maintenance and repairs.

Also again, where are you located. Whare has the car spent the majority of its life.

Does it have rust issues

Northeast car
daily driver less than 50 a day
some rust but I haven’t seen it up close just yet so idk about the frame
I Can do most work myself but sometimes choose not to

The mileage is less than usual, which is a good thing.
Your ability to do your own maintenance is a real plus.

Much of the decision involves the condition of the car.
I mean which repairs have been done. Also which ones need attention.

A forum friend of mine lives in central NY. She has owned 2 1997 Maximas, and another for parts.
She has driven the two cars for perhaps 300,000 miles.

Id say that the car you are considering is well worth looking at.

The VERY FIRST thing I'd investigate is the Lower Radiator Support.Not only does it support the radiator, but the engine and transmission cross member as well.Well known for rusting to the point of failure in snow and salt areas in less years than the car you are looking at. I have a 99 and did mine years ago, And the only place my car has rust is around the passenger rear wheel well.

Not something many can do themselves (Welding and rust proofing skills needed). And most Body Shops won't do it, or worse, do it right. I also don't think you can easily find a Nissan Lower Radiator Support anymore. And all the aftermarket ones are garbage.

thanks KP. When I am offered the car I’ll take a look at that support.

Overall this is encouraging. The current owner has kept up with it and made some improvements of which I am unclear in the total work he did. I know he has replaced the usual plugs coils oil coolant water pump. Exhaust has a hole someplace.

I am not expecting miracles on a 23 year old car, just something drivable. I have no intention of adding nitrous or turbo to it.

Consider painting the car underneath with POR15 to convert/seal the existing rust.

I don't know if this applies to 4th gen, but I saw this interesting article about a common way that the ECU gets fried on a 5.0 (not 5.5) gen Maxima:

  1. Preventative IACV Replacement. It seems that most IACV’s fail at around 100-120k miles. To replace your IACV, you have to remove the Throttle Body and unscrew the four Phillips screws holding the IACV. This is not a pleasant task, as the screws tend to be frozen. Once the job is done, a new IACV (use OEM part only) should be good for another 100K miles or more.

I still see 4th gen Maximas in Texas salvage yards. It might be worth the trip if you REALLY need one.

This is not a known issue with 4th gen Maximas.
