Supporting the Engine with a Jack
Supporting the Engine with a Jack
I want to change my rack and pinion based on details on this thread:
https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...ring-rack.html
One of the things that is necessary is removing or loosening engine mounts and removing the front engine cross member that contains the front center jack point.
If you remove engine support, you have to support the engine with a jack (bottle jack, or floor jack with a piece of wood).
Is there any information on supporting the engine for this? Would you have to support the engine and transmission with jacks?
I can't seem to find anything on doing this for these cars like where exactly do you place the supports?

When I replaced my rack and pinion, i supported the engine/transmission with only a single jack and a piece of wood. I placed it close to where the engine and transmission meet on the transmission housing and did not have any issues. This job took me about a week of my free time and i left the jack in place the entire time. Be mentally prepared for what you will be doing. Taking off that dust boot is a PITA!! not to mention you will struggle getting the new rack connected to the yoke/steering wheel column. highly recommend following that guide and removing the rack through the passenger side then down the engine bay. I had to remove the 2 screws holding the yoke/steering column from the top (hood/engine bay area) and had to move the fuel filter out of the way.
Good luck man and god speed.

No, the write up about removing rack and pinion doesn't include removing the transmission. What @@Turbobink posted looks like it can support the engine by putting support under the oil pan.

Did you remove the steering wheel when you replaced the rack and pinion? I wondering if it was omitted because it's already in the FSM and is unavoidable.
So you're saying if I remove the support bar / cross member, the engine won't fall because the remaining mounts will hold it in place, and I can support the engine with a jack after I removed the support bar? I like the idea of using an engine support bar from above because it clears up space underneath the vehicle.

I did not have to remove my steering wheel. I did however made sure it was strapped down to the bottom of the driver's seat before i disconnected the steering column. Make sure you have the proper o-rings for the low and high pressure hoses before you drop the old rack and pinion. In my opinion, dont take the risk and toss out the old o-rings and replace them, dont want you to have to re-do everything because the o-rings "looked good enough" to be used again
