On the contrary. I think the front end of the 95-96 shows off how sleek and flowing it is.

The reason I don't like the horiz. crease is the fact that it makes the car look really squished (horizontally) from a distance when looking at the rear.

Has anyone shaved off their Nissan emblem in the back? how does it look? I'm thinking about doing this...

Me too! I was like "OK" when the 95 came out. I still loved the 3rd gen more. Then 97 and hell yeah!

I gotta say, Pawn, that's one badass profile of your car. Almost like Darth Vader's gonna step out of the driver's seat!

Personally, I hated my 96 rear end. So that is why I converted it to a 97+ when someone hit me in the rear. I think it looks so much better now, but I do see why you think the 95-96 has a more aggressive look to it and the 97+ has a sportier look. My .02 cents.

:o)

I've often pondered this Craig. I am torn. I like the fact that the '95/'96 rear bumper cover is 1-2" shorter, making the car look cleaner and its stupid ridge/line is less pronounced making it really look cleaner. However, I recently traded my '96 bumper for a '97/'99 for one reason and one reason only: the Stillen ground effects look 10x better! for the '97/'99s.
As for the lights. Well, I'm torn on this too. I kinda like how the inner taillights follow the design of the trunk on the '95/'96 but, ... I don't like the design of the trunk! It just seems a little weird how the inner taillights on the '97/'99 have that tapered/beveled look around them. They don't seem to connect in with the trunk as well. Also, I can't explain why but I just feel the red/clears look better on the '95/'96 than the '97/'99s. I can't really put my finger on it, I just like the red on the bottom. Otherwise it seems like it's floating. Maybe just me.
As for the keyhole. I hate that big, ugly, unnsymmetrical thing to no end but the '97/'99s are a hair better in that it is more flush.
As for the lettering, I think it should be shaved, they are both too big, but if you do leave them on, I like the '95/'96 seperated M A X I M A better.
Now, for the trunk shape itself, I think the '97/'99s have the '95/'96s beat.
Conclusion: I have no idea.

Potato, let's just put it this way: The '95-96 have things that make it look good, and so do the 97-99. Although opinions vary, I think most would agree that both look NICE overall. (both having the orange cleared out). Both are MAXIMA'S therefore both kick-@ss!

Hope that helped ya.

97+. I think the flat trunkback on the 97+'s look much cleaner when shaven.

Just like beaver. The younger, the cleaner.

What bugs me about the 95-96 tail is that the bottom row of brake lights is the same size as the top row of indicator/backup lights, giving the 95/96 tail a sort of blocky, tron robot look. The style is kinda lost in the lights.

On the 97-99 tails, Nissan switched the rows around, putting the brake lights on top, and they also made the brake lights bigger than the bottom row of indicator/backup lights. That looks better to me. If there was one thing I would change about the 97-99 tail, I'd put the brake lights on the bottom, like the 95-96, but that's it.

97+ all the way, the taillights just have that newer look to them, 95-96 looks dated.

Anyway since i did a front end conversion for my 96 i want to do a rear one as well, all i really want to change is the lights, what else needs changing?

I personally like only rear tail lamps from 95-96, clear/red. Those look better then 97-99 red/clear. But the rear end overall, definately 97-99yr

personally, i like the way the 97-99 tails are because of what you stated, where the brake lights are bigger than the backup lights...but i also like the fact that the brake lights are on the top row...to me, they just look better that way than being on the bottom
