How long does the tapping sound go for?

low octane gas may cause that.

Re: idling noise

I am getting more engine noise at 105K miles on my 1997 Maxima SE (VQ30DE engine). It would normally go away after driving for awhile, but has become almost constant. I did some research, and found that this engine type (only) has a valve lash adjustment. The procedure seems to be taking off the valve covers, following a measuring procedure that really requires the step-by-step method in the book, and, for those valves that are out of range, using a special Nissan tool to enable the removal of the old shims, and replacement with thicker shims that bring the adjustment within range. - I need to check to see what Nissan charges to do this and make a decision whether to do it myself (preferred), or have them do it.

Not sure if this is what you are starting to get, since you didn't give your mileage, but it may be worth checking. Good luck

Re: Re: idling noise

I have 75,000 and it only does it when its in parking idling or in drive and sound is usually kinda tapping off and on, but usually stops after awhile? Can you explain how much this would cost to get fixed in a shop and also is it a problem i need to get checked out?
thanks

Mine has always done the same thing off and on. It now has 63K on it. My theory is it's a lifter that bleeds down a little. I don't know, it doesn't really seem to be a problem though.

If it was a lifter bleeding down? I dont know anything about it. Could this be a problem in our generation maximas. We have determined everyones is doing it, now whether or not it is a problem is a question? Anyone else that has this problem come in and let us know your mileage and if you think its a problem. hope everything is alright.

I'm just guessing as to what it is, I don't really know. It's been doing it for years with no consequences so far, so I'm not really concerned.

I think we should find out what the problem is and bring others in the post that have the same problem so we are all happy we know what it is. I think it would make us all happy knowing the problem if there is one.

Can't argue with that logic.
