Vacuum System

Can anyone here point me to a website that will explain exactly what the vacuum system does? I broke a vacuum hose on my brothers car the other day, and I"m not sure how critical it is. Soes anyone know EXACTLY what the vacuum system and all those little hoses are for?

Out of curiosity how did you break it?

The vacumm system performs dozens of functions. You need to figure out which line you broke before you will be a ble to tell what it will affect.

I pulled up the filter housing up too hard and it just cracked. It HAD to have been old and worn anyway, cause I've never just CRACKED vacuum hoses in two...., the hose was inserted past the air filter, on the throttle body side, there was a canister inside the housing near the throttle, that the hose connected to.... I cracked the house on the OUTSIDE of the housing though, so everything INSIDE the housing is the same, it's just that the hose ends as it makes it's way to wherever it's going. I didn't reconnect it, I'll have to rig something to do it, and didn't have time then, but the car is running fine.

Think this could be detrimental in the long run? I mean, I have no idea what the hose is even THERE for?

Just buy a piece of vacuum hose from autozone and replce the one you broke, no big deal.

The stuff is like a dollar a foot.

Yeah, I'm not really worried about cost or difficulty of replacing it, that's not a problem, I was just wondering what it DOES... It's one of those areas I don't know anything about... thought someone here might.

The problem is, there are a bunch of lines in the area you describe. If you could provide a picture, that would help a lot.
