(LONG)impractical--but true--race results versus a cobra today
I had just finished washing and waxing my 96 se 5-speed. I was minding my own business riding in the left lane of a two lane highway when some guy in a red mustang cobra(unsure of exact year...somewhere between 96-98) (with a nice looking girl riding with him) comes flying up in the right lane and cuts me off just before I was about to merge left into a turning lane to get onto a two lane onramp to another highway. He proceeds to merge over into the turning lane I was going to get into and I get behind him. He was first in line and the entire time we were waiting for the light to change he kept inching forward and revving his engine. I was thinking if he takes off I am going to try and keep up and see of I can embarrass him with his girl in the car. Well when the light finally changed he takes off pretty slowly and I was riding his *** trying to get him to race. It is a wide left turn and as soon as he straightened up he guns it. I thought I was ready for him to do that but the damn turn was so wide that even though he took it slow my rpms were past 4 almost out of the turn so I was shifting into second (still unsure if he was going to race or not) right when he took off. I floored it going into second and it spun like hell but he put about a half a car length on me and (now here's the part I still can't believe) he didn't put any more distance the rest of the way through 2nd and 3rd. I stayed within one car length almost the whole time. His car got loud as hell and sounded really nice. As soon as I went into 4th gear he started to put distance on me and by the time I got to almost 120 he hit his brakes and was about 4 or 5 car lengths ahead. The only thing I can figure is either he was in the wrong gear or he didn't floor it. The latter can almost be eliminated because I was about the run him over from 30 to 90 and I think he would have been trying to get away. The weird thing is, and I thought those only came in manuals, I never heard him shift. If he was in the right gears he should have beaten me badly. I don't know but if I were him I would have been really ****ed because he couldn't pull on a 4 door car with over 140,000 miles and no mods and a dirty air filter. Oh, and the girl in the car probably only weighed about what I have in my trunk so we were even there Whatever the reasons for the outcome I am now a really happy M_A_X_I_M_A owner.

I'm thinkin it was probably a rebadged GT. I've raced 2 96-98 cobras at the track, both were convertibles actually, and they both ran 13.8s at 103 mph. That's quite a difference from a typical stock 5 speed maximas 92 mph trap speed or modded 5 speed 96 mph trap speed. Enough that he should be pulling on you the entire time. A GT you would give a run for its money, or even beat, depending on some variables.

I've read a post a while back, and one guy on here ran his friends Cobra from a roll, and it's kewl b/c none of them pull on each other. And when they race from a dead, the Cobra pulls slightly on the start but never gains anything after 40+, so at 80 they are both pretty even. But this Max was modded, door to door.

Only 240 hp, low 14's in the 1/4, not exactly a kill compared to the some of the 5spds on this site. After 98 I think they had more hp, but before than they weren't anything to brag about

I just looked up the stats, and found that you were partially right, which surprised me. I had assumed that all 1994-1998 cobras would lay the smack down on us. You were right about 240hp, and 285 ft lb. That would pull out on all but the most well driven or heavily modded 4th gen maxima, but not by much.
However, the 1996-1998 Cobra has 305 hp, and 300 ft lb. Both of the ones I raced were 1996-1998 style, convertibles. They trapped at 103-104 mph, enough to put the hurt on any maxima.
Guess its time to go hunting for 94-95 Cobras for me

An easy way to tell an older Cobra is in the tailights....'96 and later have vertical tailights, pre-'96 have horizontal. The pre-'96 Cobras have the old 5 liter GT motor - they are simply a dolled up GT. The Cobra motor is a DOHC 4.6 L which has great torque, but is really designed to run well at higher revs.
My brother has a '96 Cobra with the 305 hp and the only place my Max can keep up is short runs between stoplights. In everyday driving I can smoke him in traffic even with my auto because the Cobra has a fairly balky shifter and it takes him a lot more work to him to get up to the speeds that my Max auto does so easily. At higher speeds, he has much more torque and hp and it really isn't a contest. I know I could do better at those speeds with a manual, but believe me, there is no substitution for cubic inches!
