Starting off in 3rd With an AUTO

Every morning on a cold new jersey monring my car is very cold. Now i start it and let ir warm up for 5-8 min every morning. And then when i pull out of my driveway and pull away and i have no tourgue or anything i know it is stuck in 3rd gear! No matter how hard i put the petal to the floor, or drop it into 1st gear when im at a stop and upshift it wont come out of 3rd gear, i even mess with overdrive and no luck. My 1995 Max have 110,000 miles and after the car warms up about half way it start to switch gears, what do i do?

Go have your tranny looked at by a transmission shop. Make sure you have some extra cash available as well. You might just need a service, but honestly it doesn't sound good.

I knew I'd heard of this but had to dig for the answer. Is your overdrive light blinking when you turn the car on? If so, you have a problem. Look here.

Instead of letting it warm up for 5-8 mins, drive off after 30 to 60 seconds. After about 5-8 min's your car should be warm and fine. I personally do not drive my car over 3000 rpms until the temp gauge is in the middle. (I do this because I want to make sure my engine has the best possible protection when I drive hard) Although I still notice a loss of power during cold morning start up's, I never drive hard until it's warm anyway and by then the car responds correctly.
I only have 57,000 miles so I doubt there is something wrong. Hope this helps.

How does your engine being warm provide protection? Never heard of that, but i am very curious

"warm" on them temp guage indicates that most of the critical fluids are at the proper operating temp.

Protection.

When your engine oil within the parameters of the normal engine operating temperature it allows for a better flow of oil throughout all you engines parts. A well lubed engine is a protected one. One of the reasons you change your engine oil is because through engine use contaminants enter the oil and break down the oils ability to properly lubricate and protect you engine.

Guys if his tranny isn't going into 1st when he come to a stop, no matter what temperature the engine, trans. or outside is. He's got a problem!

From a complete stop, your auto should be in 1st. On a rolling stop, say California style (I have no clue how that term came about) I do know our Autos like to stay in 3rd especially when it's cold, BUT it will definately downshift as soon as throttle is applied. He's car isn't going into first. He's got a major problem developing.

Go have a shop look at it ASAP.
