What is the fastest you guys have been able to get your Maxima's up to? I had a GXE, but I kept hitting the speed limited at 118. Upgraded to 99 SE, I was able to get up to 127. Has anyone taken theirs faster??

Not yet...

I've only taken her up to 120. I felt like it could've done more but I had one of those eerie feelings cops were near by. I hit my 120 without a radar, so I was still trying to remain cautious. Any NYC riderz have a nice road they like to open up on please share with me.

Back in 95 I took my 95SE 5sp up to 135+ and it was still pulling a little. It was a long straight flat road out here in West Texas. The altitude was appx. 3K feet (don't remember the temp.) so it didn't have maximum sea level HP.

Post mods I haven't tried it and I'm in no hurry to do it!

Mines a 140+ MPH car for sure.

On a local highway here in NJ (287) i was able to hit 117mph or so then my limiter would kick in. It sucks. And damn it i lost to my friends SI!!! He kept goin up to 130mph he said, which I don't doubt at all. I also do think that having Cali models and temp difference and whatnot do play a factor. Damn autos!!!

Yeah, you will defenetly not be able to get an automatic to go as fast as a 5spd. The only reason I couldn't go faster than 127 was because I was catching up to cars ahead, I'm sure I could have gone faster.
But when I rented a 2k SE Auto ( I was surprised I could rent that from Budget rent a car) to drive up to Morroso Motorsports for the import drag racing, I got her up to 125 and she would not go any higher.
My question now is, why is it that a 95se 5spd seems to have a higher top speed than a 99se 5spd?

Yeah, Auto can make it too, but it just takes much longer I think. As for the 95gle, it has a speed limiter too because of the tires. you won't be able to get it past 118

Top Speed

I waxed this 2000 Avalon (you kow the ugly *** boxy one) last night on 495. I toyed with him till the straight away - even let him lead for a while. Punched it at about 100-105 - left his but in the dust. He tried but he could not catch up. When I looked at the speedo 124.. A first for me - was there more????? I think so..........

Avalons are ugly *** cars.
A while back I took at 99 Diamante, He never passed me, I had two to three car lenghts on him doing about 110 when this cherokee cut me off. I left like half my tire thread behind when I hit the brakes. Ever since then, one of the tires got bumped.
I really need ABS

Tires are only rated safe up to certain speeds. So depending on what tires are put on your car, the ECU is speed limited to that speed.

Top speed run on public streets is LAME...

Nope, its all GXE and GLE are speed limited
Only SE come with "H" or better rated tires therefore they're not limited.
Only way around it is either buy a SE or change the ECU

there are no bugs eating at me to top my speed limiter, i had to clarify

GLEs are speed-governed to ~130 from the factory.

So you're saying tha GLE is speed limited to 130. That means that if you ever want to reach the full potential of your engine with mods, you have to go SE

Yes. More closer to 130 than the 118 limiter on the GXEs w/o convenience package.

"You have to go SE," eh?

I had a limiter in my 95 GXE, I would never want to go back to that.
First thing I did when I got my 99 SE was a top speed run.
I think I could definetly get it faster than 127.
She'll accelerate to 125 than start to cruise.

Just recently on the AC expressway in NJ, I got my max up to 115 MPH. My friend and I were messing around (he has a Z28 camaro with lots of mods, its fast). Then I heard this loud noise and suddenly we both got passed my a sport bike. I didn't see what kind of bike it was, but that guy passed us like we were standing still. That guy either had huge ***** or no brain.

guess i win huh?

i've hit 125 legally (on a race track)
and 145 illegally...

in central texas lots of straight roads w/ no traffic...w/ 2 buddys in the car hit got it to 145 (indicated) before i let off the gas.... seems like it took forever to get there though...

also remember the tach is off by like 300 rpm near redline so i'm sure the speedo is off too at higher speeds.

oh! that was also w/ 225-50/16's on my stock rims which are a larger diameter so actually was going faster than that!!

lol

Here's the deal. At least on 5-spds, any car with out comfort and convience is governed at 110mph. There is a delay when you hit 110, that delay lets you accelerate up to 118. If you try to stay at 111-115, it will still govern. The only way around this is to replace the ECU.

My top speed

After reading this I had to try it again and this time my 95se 5sp. sprinted with ease until it redlined in fith I hit 130 mph in fourth and easily got to 150+ wow what a thrill I was surprised it kept accelerating right to redline which is said to be 157 mph.Last time I tried a top speed was when my max was completly stock and hit 138mph.I think the bigest top speed getter is lowering your car and putting on a body kit,and redoing the whole exaust system really lets the engine breeth better at high rpm's

I've gotten my speedometer all the way to max in my '99 Maxima SE about 3 times. All runs were done in Dallas, TX on the Dallas Tollway, and I know ive gotten in the 135-140mph range.

Right now its stock, but I'm going to put in a simple K&N panel filter, and try again and see If I can get her faster and if it will get accelarate a bit quicker.

OK OK, a lot of us have gone past 100mph The question is, how long have you stay at that speed? And how does the car feel like?

Personally I still remember the first time I went past 100mph in stock form. I have a GLE, no spoiler, and the factory Goodyears. The car felt like it was going to start flying (because it wasn't griping the road to well). I have since added 17" Pirellis, and the improvement has been huge. I am just wondering if the spoiler makes any significant differnce, because it is fwd.

just tried it

my 97 GLE speeded up to 120 pretty easily then very slowly went to 126. Maybe cuz I was going a little up hill. Anyways, I had to give up cuz I was afraid of cops. Next time I'll try again I guess.

Got radared at 148

I was on a ten mile flat strait stretch with rather nice blacktop condition. My friend in the highway patrol radared me at 148 mph. I was going at top speed for about two minutes, but due to the speed, i was watching the road so hard, I forgot to look at my tach. My car has a 4 speed auto, but I don't think that it could do any faster than that.

When I first ran it as hard as I could and it was stock, the speedo said 135 and that was going down hill heading into Vegas from Cali.

Since then, I have lowered the car, put on z rated 235 wide tires in 17" form, high performance shocks. I then put a y-pipe, RT high flow cat, Stillen b-pipe, and Magnaflow muffler, and Stillen intake. With these mods I then ran the top speed.

The car felt very floaty before at over 110 but now felt stable all the way up to top speed. The aerodynamics are much better with just a couple inches of lowering, and more stable with good high performance tires.

My 99SE feels very stable up to about 120. When I had my 95GXE, anything over 100 the car felt unsteady and that was with 235 45 17 Ohtsu tires.
Probably the SE sports suspension helps her feel more steady.

Remember every one->

Stock speedos are rarely dead on and could be indicating high or low. Different outside diameter tires will affect the speedo incation. At 130+ a 5% error is 6.5 mph.

With that my 92se pulled to 130-140 mph easy. At least that is what the speedo said.

top speed

i was able to get my 93se 5sp up to an "indicated" 145 mph on I-75 (alligator alley) in florida. the car is stock and i had 215/60/15. i agree with jeff92se that different tire diameters will cause larger degrees of speedo error.

if 205/65/15 is the stock tire size with a diameter of 25.5in then any tire with a smaller diameter will make your speedo read faster and vice-versa for a tire with a larger diameter. this is acoording to the percent of error indicated.

Your car isn't really limited by the tires. But from the factory the car comes with S rated tires. And the speed rating for those tires are about 112-120 or so. So they can't allow the car to go faster than that.. So the ECU cuts in when you reach around 112 or so.

Re: Not yet...

Cross Island Parkway at around 3am.. =) I've done 125+ in my car before I had the Y-pipe there.. Chasing my friend's VTEC Lude.. I also took my friend's NSX on a 150mph run on the same stretch.. Right before whitestone expressway. Gotta watch out though.. Once I was in my friend in his impreza and we were trying to see if we could bounce the needle on his 120mph speedo and we almost blew by an unmarked car that was moving at about 45mph. We just made it down to 55 or so and passed him. Lucky he tapped his brakes and I saw the extra lights in his rear window. But that was at like 1 am.. At about 3 its pretty dead. Oh, BTW, watch out for the nasty turn after the long stretch if you're comming from the LI side..

I had a Stillin high flow intake and found that I lost power over the stock intake. Sucking the hot underhood air sounded better but it went slower. I changed it out to a cold air intake and got the extra HP I thought I was going to get when I installed the Stillen unit.

If you want to see pictures of the install go to:

2K SE AUTO here 132mph and hit the limiter, took less than 1 min from 70 to get there But since my tires are slightly oversized, the limiter is actually at 135 mph, so that is what I was actually going...
