having trouble with fan..I think
To start off I have a 96 Maxima. When I turn on my fan, it starts humming very loudly, and not much air...if any is coming through the vents. I had gone away for a little bit and the car had sat in the same spot for 3-4 weeks, and this problem started the first time starting the car. It was not humming before I left. Any help would be most appreciated, long car ride tommorow through New England..thanx

Make sure the fan is not touching anything. Check to make sure it is not lose for some reason. If all else fails try spraying some wd-40 along the center of the fan (where it turns) and check again. You should to have any problems with a trip just keep you eye on your temp gauge just in case.

Hondakiller, I think he means the A/C or heater fan. Some noise is to be expected but if it is more than you're used to maybe a door in the duct work is jammed or binding or maybe there is some debris in the fan? Sorry I don't know much about the system but I would try variations in the routing of the air to see if it will work itself out. Try sending all the air to the floor, then the upper ducts, and so on. Hope this helps, good luck.

I had tried differenet settings like floor and defrost etc.. but they all had the same effect. It is a very loud humming, and it sounds reallly bad. I have tried doing research, and found that it's difficult getting into that part of the dash. The air does sound blocked, so maybe something got jammed in there, I just don't know how, the car had not been moving. Could possibly somthing froze?

I remember my HVAC fan made a squeaking sound and it was replaced under warranty. Now, two years later, the sound is back and I am out of warranty. The fan isn't hard to replace, but you have to remove the glovebox to get at it. The blower should be around $150 or so.
But definitely check to make sure the little motorized doors which route the air are not jammed first before replacing that expensive fan motor.
