Early models of catalytic converters could change the HC (HydroCarbon)and CO (Carbon Monoxide) components of automotive exhaust into harmless chemical compounds. They were not effective in dealing with NOX (Oxides of Nitrogen).

More recent models of catalytic converters effectively handle all three kinds of exhaust emissions, and these are called "3-way" converters. They are mounted as close to the engine as possible, but the exteriors do not look especially different from the 2-way converters. The important differences are on the inside.

According to the factory service manual my '99 Maxima is equipped with a 3-way cat. I believe all OBD-2 compliant engines have one.
