best brake pads?

Hi, I'm going to need new brakes soon and want to know what kind I should get next. I have a 1995, GXE, auto with the stock pads on there now. What kind should I upgrade to? thanks.

The stock pads are actually pretty good. Go to your nissan dealer and get a new set. DON'T get Bendix pads, they squeak like crazy. Some other aftermarket ones are Raybestos and Axxis Metalmaster. Do a search on this, you'll get more info.

IMO just buy the Stock Pads

I just went through this. The shop guy swore up and down the Raybestos would not squeal...."They're organic....blah, blah, blah" Sure they didn't squeal for about a day, but when they started squealing, they were squealing. You could hear me 2 blocks away no joke. Made me want to run and hide every time I had to stop. I took it back and he sprung for factory pads and they are working great. If you want to avoid all the hastle just go with the stock pad. My local dealer wanted $57 plus tax for the pads. You can order them from www.nissan-accessories.com for $31.94 including UPS shipping and no tax. Great deal. About the same price as Raybestos, etc.

Slotted rotors are a waste of money unless you want looks or are driving on the track, and I don't mean the drag strip.

Cant they help also with just general braking? I thought they lowered the amount of distance it took to stop?

If your finding that its too hard to break you might also want to buy a new set of factor rotors as well. Having them recut multiple times takes its toll.

Re: best brake pads?

I had EBC green brake pads. They worked great, but I got tired of the dust and went back to stock.

I just put porterfield pads and new rotors on my car, and I think I am going to stick with them from now on... check out www.maximadriver.com in the group buy section, they are like $70 for the fronts...

Cant you get red or yellow ones from that company that are supposed to not dust as much?

Those are for Race applications, the green are for street applications...

i had axxis metal masters with my brembo slotted/drilled rotors and ss lines and the thing just takes to long to warm up but it bites like crazy when its hot, i am gonna go for porterfield rs4 street pads for my stock rotors on my 97(for now, upgrading to fast brakes kit when i have $$). On my old car with the brembo, goodridge ss lines, and axxis pads i could drive on the highway for 20min and then have to brake and i would get barely anything, its scary sometimes, i heard the RS4's bite right from the start so i'll be going that route.

I have porterfield pads (R4S) right now and after you drive a few thousand miles on them, they get better. Initially when installed, they were absolutely horrible. I would have step really hard on the brake just to get any stopping force, and in the morning, it was downright dangerous when the pads were cold. Now, they feel almost as progressive as the stock pads, but bite a bit better in extreme braking. For everyday driving, I would stick with the stock pads. If you want performance pads, get the porterfields, but be prepared for their unusual braking characteristics, which after a while, isn't difficult to adjust to.

I have high performance Raybestos and I love em. They're quite and they don't produce a lot of brake dust.

SuDZ,

Slotted or cross drilled rotors work to help the gas escape that is generated during heavy repetive braking. The difference they would make on the street, unless we start talking repeated stops from 100 or so, is pretty small. Any real speed shop will tell you that.

EBC red's can be used on the street, they are little more powerful and fade resistant than Porterfield's R4S, and will need to be warmed up with a good stop in the morning before they are really ready. Despite EBC's claims they still dust and the wear very fast. The yellow's are their full blown track pad and are not made for the Maxima so far.

Poterfield's are the best pads for our cars in my opinion. I've teasted them in a few emergency situations (without wanting to) and they always surprised me how well they performed.

As far as to cross-drill or not... it depends a lot on your driving style to determine if it's worth it. You don't necessarily have to be on the track to take advantage of what they can offer. If you do a lot of high speed driving or a lot of late braking into turns as I do, it's well worth the extra cooling, bite and anti-fade. If not, it's just for looks.

The greens aren't supposed to dust much either. Anyway, the colors refer to formulations of pads, so the green are for street, the reds for racing etc. The racing ones have to be heated up to work, so they wouldn't be the best choice for a grocery run.
