I have been looking for a Maxima but suprisingly, almost all the ones for sale here in the MD, VA, even philly area don't have ABS.
So how hard is it to put in abs in a 4th gen????????????

Thanks for your time
Mike

I'm going out on a limb here, coz I am not the most mechanically inclined on this board ... but .. I would say it would be pretty damn difficult.

It is essentialy impossible to add aftermarket. It would be hard enough that you should just hold out for one that already has it.

I guess it was just wishful thinking..
i saw ABS module off a 4th gen for sale once so i thought maybe i could get one installed...
..
I guess its more complicated than i thought.

Thanks for the enlightenment

I bought my Maxima SE in San Antonio. I'd say NONE of the SE's sold there came with ABS standard. However, ABS was an option that the dealer would install for $500. I'd ask your dealer about this. You may be only a couple hours and $500 away from having ABS...

Just out of curiosity, you seem to have your heart set on ABS... is there some reason you consider it to be so necessary? I chose not to get the ABS on my 99 when I bought it for a couple of reasons, and I've never had any problems with braking... Some people will tell you that the stock maxima brakes suck, but I had a 3rd gen (93gxe) I got when I turned 16, and those brakes sucked (discs in front, drums in rear). I think the brakes on my 99 are great. As long as I don't go berserk in the rain, it's very hard to "lock up" the brakes. Good tires also help. All that said, though, I live in Alabama, so we don't get that snow stuff...

I think ABS is required

I dont have it but I wish I did. It takes all the effort out of braking hard. In a panic situation or on low traction surfaces, you dont even have to think. All you do is floor the brake pedal and steer. That is what makes it worth it to me.

Had ABS on my Taurus. I guess it is just of piece of mind thing about having. I felt a little safer about braking but never had to use them. Had the car for 3 yrs. Don't have them on my Max but that was not an issue in buying the car. Love the car anyway.

I am BUTT positive. At the time I purchased this car new, December of 1994, ABS wasn't standard, but it was offered as a dealer-installed option for $500. Agreed, there isn't much use for ABS down south, although roads can be slick down here when it rains. ABS has helped me avoid countless collisions and it's probably saved my life at least once. I strongly recommend ABS for everyone who lives/drives north of the Mason-Dixon Line: That is, all y'all who live north of Tennessee! Y'all be careful now, hear? :-)

northeast....

the only reason why i want ABS is cause i live in MD and for past few years we have gotten alot of snow/ICE.
Also i travel up to ny during the winter which makes me want ABS even more.

Last year i was going down a street which is downhill...I hit a snow/ice patch and totally lost control of the car....luckily I have ABS on my caprice......
even with abs it took me over 300 feet to stop....thats how slick it was....and i was only going around 12mph and still could not stop...
i came a few inches away from hitting a big pole.

if not for abs i would still be sliding down that hill
..hahahahahaah

if i lived in a dry area i would not care...
currently my abs has never had to activated when in the rain...its the snow and ice that worries me.

thanks for all the help!!

Mike
remember....drive safely...

yes its proven that a proffesional can stop better and faster than an ABS system....but when you plan on giving your mother the car to drive when it snows you want ABS.

plus i have not had the chance to go to a driving school..
i am too busy paying for tuition and going to classes..

From what I'm told it is impossible to add ABS without spending more than enough money to buy a car with factory ABS.

You'd have to run new calipers (I *think*), ABS lines, ABS controller, change the wiring harness.... it'd be f*cking expensive and f*cking labor intensive.... The labor is what has to be very scary.
