Installed Carbon Fiber Altezzas (Pics)

Good point. I definitely noticed how the 95-99 Maxima didn't have to have a separate side parking light in the rear because the taillights have built-in reflectors. If the Altezza taillight isn't reflective from the side, it's a hazard regardless of DOT approval. Perhaps if the light may be disassembled without breaking it, a thin reflector could be mounted in there somewhere.

Here is a quote from a site linking the NHTSA Standards (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's):
"...If you compare the photos of a stock 2000 Chevy S10 taillamp and an Altezza style taillamp for the same model, you notice that the Altezza style lamp is missing the side (red) reflex reflector which existed in the OEM lamp. This particular Altezza style lamp may also be missing proper side marker functionality as well."
The site I found this on also linked gave a wealth of information about lights and other automotive regulations including your own state regulations. This data was taken from the following site link: Altezza Style Taillamps
Someone mentioned that the DOT marking doesn't mean s@*t and that seems to be true. What the lights need are the SAE markings. The SAE symbol and year indicate that the manufacturers have certified that the taillamps conform to the indicated SAE standards of the indicated year. One site has a disclaimer on their site about the Euro lights stating:
"...Euro Clear lenses are DOT approved, but taillight modification laws vary from state to state. Please check your local laws."
I have seem some Altezzas with the red reflector built into the side of the red outermost circular lens housing. It seems that all you may need to do is to add a side red reflector somewhere on the side back if the car. Make a design feature of it and put it on the side of the bumper, similar to the Corvettes.
Lastly, I ran across this statement on my state regulation site:
"...In addition to the lights required in this section, each such vehicle shall be equipped with amber reflectors located on each side thereof, at or near the front. Red reflectors shall be used on the rear of each such vehicle. Such reflectors shall be securely fastened to the vehicle not less than fifteen inches and not more than sixty inches from the ground. For a vehicle that is less than fifteen inches tall, however, such reflectors shall be securely fastened thereto at the highest point the structure of a vehicle will permit. The reflectors shall be of a type approved by the Superintendent."
The 6th Gen Max has those red pointed reflectors on the back side panel because their rear tail lights also don't have the side reflectors. That's my 12 cents.
