The actual facts about racing your auto...?

alright, here is the thing. i have been told when you race to put it into second, and keep overdrive on. others say you put it into first and have overdrive off, and so on. Can someone please clear up what is right and what is wrong? Thank You very much!!!!

Honestly, having overdrive on or off doesn't really make a difference. Starting in 1st or 2nd also doesn;t make much of a difference. I have the best success with my auto when I:
1) Hold down the brake hard
2) Rev up to 1500-2000rpm
3) On green, release brake and floor throttle.
This will give you by far the quickest launch with minimal wheelspin. Someone else on the .org has done runs all ways amd has had the quickest times with this method. I would also say it is the best way to race that I've learned yet (with an auto anyway).
Try it.

Tony

I leave it in drive and turn off the OD. I found that shifting confuses the tranny computer. When you reach maximum rpms just feather the pedal abit to allow the gears to drop in quicker instead of flooring through gearshifts, it takes to long for the shifts to occur.

i shift my car myself from 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 i shift it into everygear and won most races and another thing at light power braking so u can get rpm's to 1500-1800 that's the best way and u will launch alote better then punching it off the line.

yeah, yeah yeah. it's still kinda seems off to me. it makes sense to screw around with the od if you're going 50 and you want a little more umph, but other than that just leave it on!

My next car will be a 5spd, the heck with all this OD on/off, manually shifting nonsense.

Anyway, IMO, OD on/off doesn't make any difference to me. Acceleration is the same to me.

As far as manually shifting, I think it's best to leave it in Drive. Especially if you have the VB upgrade. However, when driving around the street, I would sometime put it in 2nd gear to see if there's any difference in that and just stomping the gas in Drive. The car seem to have a bit more of a kick when you stomp on the gas in 2nd gear when going around 20-40mph. Doing that too often can't be good, so I have to just put up with it for now.

When I go to the track, I'm planning to just leave it in Drive. Hopefully I can get very low 15s.

yea, dropping down to 2nd at 40mph seems to pull much harder since its already in gear instead of mashing the pedal in drive and having the Torque convertor just spinning until it downshifts.

o/d off is your best idea if your under about 130.. my 2 cents

and leaving it in 2 shifting to "D" just past red line works very well.

racing has so many different types... from a stop... from a roll.. 1/4 mile.

Each TYPE of race presents it's own little challange's. The things you need to find out are what RPM's you should launch at from a dead stop and what speeds NOT to race at.

This is important so you can stay in your car's "powerband" and there is no hesitation when you floor the gas.

Doesn't the TCU shift the car around 500rpm before the redline? Given a stock maxima or one with I/Y the optimal shift points for the auto is 6500, 6300. Since the tach is about 200-300rpm ahead, 1st gear should go close to the rev limiter, while 2nd should be around an indicated 6400-6500rpm.

mmm....I've heard of stepping on the brake at a red light and revving your engine in drive. BUT...doesn't this fu(k up something? Logically, it sounds like it would mess somthing up. The Transmission is the second most expensive thing to fix, next to a new engine. Oh yeah, turning off OD just locks out 4th gear. What I do is gas it to the threshold of slipping and once the car gets moving a little, give it full throttle. Flooring it from a stop gives some wheel spin and loss of power. Just my .02

O...I forgot...I just leave it in drive. I turn off OD on the freeway for fun. It's cool how torquey the VQ30 is on the freeway
