Tranny main shaft bearings going?

I am looking to pick up a 95 for cheap, but the tranny main shaft bearing is apparently going. On a scale of 1-10 of DIY'ers I am about a 7-8... Can I handle this fix in the driveway?

Chris;

If you can remove, disassemble and replace your tranny in your driveway, it's not a difficult fix.

I just had my bearings and clutch replaced on my 95SE (at 78,000miles)at a transmission shop. The bearings were less than $150 - you don't want to know what the labor cost was - but it took a total of 9 hours to do the bearings and clutch and seven of that total was to "re and re" the transmission.

Good luck with this project.

Re: Tranny main shaft bearings going?

There is a good article on www.motorvate.ca that has an awesome write up on how to repair some of the bearings in the tranny, check it out.

OK how do you know it is the mainshaft bearings going? Anyway, there are 3 sets of bearings in the manny tranny. the Input bearings, the mainshaft/output bearings and the differential bearings. So far the most common bearing to go is the differential bearings, but I can see the others going too.

When I dissassmembled my transmission and bought another one, I found that the shims in both transmissions were the same, in place where the tolerance is precise to the .0015". Go quality control!

To replace the mainshaft bearings, you're going to need a press. I suppose you can use a hammer but thats not really a good idea. However, you'll need a special tool in order to measure for the shims of the main shaft. This tool is hard to find. On the input or the differential shafts, you can just use a precision dial gauge. Get a factory service manual and you'll see what I'm talking about. This will be a job for the advanced home mechanic.
