Brake Caliper Pin Question
Brake Caliper Pin Question
Front brakes, 1995 Maxima SE: re-assembly issue.
In the process of doing other brake work, I took the front caliper pins out of the "torque members" to clean, regrease, etc.
I realized after began to clean the front brake caliper pins, that one of the pins is smooth and the other has several "grooves" machined into it.
Problem: I don't know whether the "grooved" pin belongs in the top or the bottom hole when I re-install the caliper. (My photographic memory failed me again).
I have a Haynes manual, but it's not mentioned. I'd like to think the Nissan engineers designed the two pins differently for a reason, so I really want to get them back in the right positions. Please help, if you know the answer to this puzzle.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Check the other front caliper.

I forgot to mention - I had BOTH sets of pins removed before I started cleaning the old grease off them, so I don't have the opposite side as a reference point. DOH! Textbook amateur maneuver.
Anyone? Bueller. . .Bueller. . .Bueller. . .
C'mon, I know a lot of you guys do your own brakes - a little help? Save Ferris!
b.u.m.p. . .
Still disassembled. Someone please, please help. I'll be in your debt. I called the Nissan dealer today & they had no clue.
Where's Daniel B. Martin when you need him?
-Wish he'd hurry back.
Cheers.

My 95 SE didn't have pins like you explain. Does the groove run the whole length of the pin? WIll they only fit back in a certain way? I wouldn't think it would matter too much unless the groove is used for guidance. Otherwise just grease em back up and make sure you torque them to the right spec. and use thread locker. The ft/lbs. for those pins is 16-23 Also, I'm looking in the FSM for those #'s and it doesn't show or mention grooves in those pins. Good luck.
THANKS!!!!!

Toolrocks:
The pin I'm referring to is definitely OEM, so I'm not sure what you have on your car, but the grooves I mentioned run around the circumference of the pin, not the length of the pin. (There are about 4 grooves on each of the two pins [one grooved pin per front caliper])
Other than that, the grooved & smooth pins are the same dimension, so there was no way to distinguish by fitment which one belonged in which position. . .
Thanks again!
