How does $1600 Sound for a NEW tranny?

just wanting opinions, it's either that or spend about the same amount to get the bearings fixed in my tranny now

For a new one that's probably about right. Have you tried finding a used or rebuilt one?

I really don't want either, I found a few on car-part.com but I just don't like the idea of buying a tranny that has been sitting in a salvage yard for God knows how long, and I have had nothing but bad things happen with a rebuilt tranny, BTW this price is with my buddy's discount, normally $2275,, anyone know where I might get a NEW one cheaper than 1600 please let me know, I don't need a new one its just the bearings but screw it it's only money right?

I just had my auto tranny completely replaced (BRAND NEW) about 6,000 miles ago.. i would be willing to sell you mine for less than 1600. i would be able to ship it to you and all, i drive my car like an old lady, so there is NO wear and tear.. the car gets constant oil changes, and is always lubed.. never had any engine issues.

let me know what you think.. i can save you a couple bucks and give you a pristeen tranny...

You guys talking about the EVAP canaster and controls?

GTRBlkMax97 - Do you have the time and desire to do this yourself? If I'm not mistaken it doesn't cost that much to do...a few hundred dollars if I'm not mistaken.

You could take the difference and put a Quaife in there while you're at it.

I really don't have the know how I don't think to take the tranny apart, so I figure I could get a new one, then in my spare time and with a FSM rebuild the tranny that I have now for the future so that if I ever have any other tranny problems I can just swap it out just an idea at this point, but I guess I need to look for a loan, where are the online sites for loans if there are any?

I'm in the same exact situation as you. My bearings are singing! $1600 for a new tranny?? Wow. great price. I'm paying $1600 installed for a 99 5 speed with 56K miles and an ACT clutch.

yep and mobil1 gear oil from the start, change it every 10,000 miles, tranny will be like new forever (at least I hope)

Well, this is the way I see it: the bearings failed and they didn't fail because of in-adequete lubircation or what-not. I've had MT-90 in my tranny ever since 50K miles. Even changed it at 100K miles just to replensih. It didn't need it. Yet, the bearings failed. I'm thinking its really just bad or in-adequete design. The only way to really fix it is to put a 5th gen 5 speed tranny in. The same thing will probably happen to your new tranny or my re-built one, just a matter of time.

Maybe you should look into cryogenically treating your tranny, like Eric D Wong suggested. If I were to go that route I would cryogenically treat the bearings mainly, it seems to be our tranny's weak point, or do the whole tranny if it was cost effective. I'll just take my tranny for now and see what happens next go round. By then there should be a few more 5th gen speeds (or new ALTIMA 5 speeds!) in the junkyards.
