I'm getting ready to have the Manual transmission fluid(oil?) pumped out.
1. How many quarts will a 95 se 5 speed take if all the old fluid is properly sucked out?
2. I would like to bring my own synthetic oil - what should I look for at walmart or wherever? At Walmart they have plenty of ATF, but I don't see anything that says Manual Transmission fluid - MTF???
3. Does Mobil make a synthetic? If so where can I get it - otherwise should I use Redline?

Thanks.

The 5-speed does not have to be pumped dry. Remove the drain plug and gravity will cause the transaxle to empty.

The recommended lubricant for the 5-speed is API GL-4, SAE80W-90.

The factory service manual specifies capacity as ...
- 4.5 - 4.8 liters for a regular transaxle.
- 4.3 - 4.5 liters for a limited-slip transaxle.

Some Maxima owners praise the synthetic gear lube, but others report mysterious axle seal leaks which began immediately after changing to synthetic. My own Maxima is still running on the factory fill.

Thank Daniel.
Is it correct that all the posts that say you can only drain 1/3 of the transmision fluid at a time (unless pumped out) refer only to Automatics?

Okay, there is actually no drain plug for the Manual Tranny. You remove the sensor thats at the bottom of the transmission housing. There is no way to suck out all the tranny fluid, therefore, you must remove the sensor. It holds 4.5 quarts, and use Red Line MT-90 if you can afford it. If not, then put at least Valvoline Synthetic, as most synthetic Tranny Oil, called "Gear Oil" will cost about $10 a quart anyways.

Yes, by all means get a Haynes manual.

The fill port is on the side of the transaxle housing which faces forward. It has a square recess. The tool for removing it is an ordinary 1/2-inch ratchet wrench with no socket on it. You just pour in the new lubricant until it begins to overflow, and that's when you know it is full. You may find it convenient to use a funnel and a length of flexible plastic tubing for this fill operation.

I respectfully disagree. The factory service manual shows a manual transaxle drain plug. It is item 3 on page MT-11. I got under my Maxima to double-check, and there is a drain plug there.

Daniel is right... there is a drain plug

and the fill plug is pretty much above it (IIRC).

Flushing only applies to the auto tranny..

Buy 5 quarts... you'll have a little left over...

I've been using Redline MTL since 5K and haven't had any leaks... I replaced the MTL at 30K too...
