ypipe leak?
Recently I rewrapped the flex section of my ypipe with header wrap. I have the WSP ypipe and by wrapping the flex section of the ypipe, I eliminated the bees in the can. However, I'm still getting a weird noise that seem to coming from the ypipe. It sounded like something is leaking out. It just doesn't sound right. Is there anyway I can tell if my ypipe has a leak? When I took off the old wrap off and drove without it, I got the leaking sound. So I thought by wrapping the flex section with new wraps it would eliminate the sound. Well, it is still there. Any ideas? I do noticed that with this odd leaking noise I also seem to have loss some power. I'm sure I wrapped the flex section pretty good too. I even put on four clamps on to hold the wrap in place securely.
Since the wall thickness of aftermarket Y's are thinner than oem ones, you probably cannot totally eliminate some noise. I could be at one of the crush ring connections though. I have some header wrap too. I should put it on sometime. Also I think one of the reasons the oem design was so crappy as they designed it to cancel noise also.

The noise wasn't there before. When I first got my ypipe, there were bees in the can. So, Mardigrasmax helped me put on some header wrap on the flex section, no noise whatsoever. That was a long time ago though. I noticed the noise after I took off the old header wrap, it was coming off, so I decided to put new wrap on it. I think maybe I didn't wrap it good enough. Maybe I should double wrap it. I'm going to do that, hopefully the noise won't be there anymore. I'm going to check out the connections too, I haven't check that out yet.
Do you have an older WSP Y-pipe from 409 stainless steel? There were quite a few issues with leaking flex sections on their early Y-pipes. But that's been fixed with their new Y-pipes that use the lined flex sections.

Yes my WSP ypipe is the older one, not the new one with the better flex section.
Anyway, since I wrapped the flex section, I was thinking should I go ahead and wrap the whole ypipe itself? What do you guys think? I bought a 50' roll of header wrap, so might as well put it to use. How about the cat, should I wrap that too?

You could but if the pipe is Jet-Hot coated, the Jet-Hot doesn't like being wrapped. Some say wrapping the pipes, heat them to much and it makes the pipes brittle.

will puttin the header wrap on the flex constric it too much so it wont expand? cuz it has to expand with the heat and like it was said in another forum, wouldnt that put all the pressure on the joints of the flex by not letting it expand? i haev a mild bees in can sound that only occurs in between 1-2 shifts and it sounds like a blow off valve and am not itching to get rid of it if its risky cuz i could rilly care less
The best way to find the leak is to either get access to a life or get 4 jackstands and lay under teh car. Have someone rev the car up while you are under there & feel for the leak. If you cant feel the leak, then have someone plug up the exhaust tip so more pressure builds up and it will force more exhaust out of the leak.
I had a leak for the longest time & i thought it was my exhaust when it was actually the cat. One of my flanges where bent a bit.
BTW, you might want to check the joints. When you uise exhaust wrap on the flex section, it stiffens up the flex section whihc puts more stress on welds. The flex section is suppose to give when you go over bumps; but with wrap, its almost like a straight pipe & there is no give.

Well I got a chance to push my car a bit and it seem the acceleration is back. I double wrapped the flex section. There is still a bit of a hiss/leaking sound, but not too bad. So double wrapping the flex section does make a difference. I checked out the connections and it seem like I need new gaskets, I think reused my stock gaskets when I put on the rt cat. So it might or might not have anything to do with that. As far as wrapping the whole ypipe, I'm going to ask Mardigrasmax and see what he thinks.
