217 Miles to the tank???? WTF

Ok, I've got a 1995 GLE with intake and exhaust, and I just checked how many miles I got out of a tank of 93 octane, and it was 217!!! I do drive in rushhour/city 95% of the time, but according to 1995 Motor Trend, the auto Max should get 389 miles off one tank in the city. I've seen other people talking about getting like 340 miles out of a tank. I was even running with my gas light on for about 20 miles....I had my 60K tuneup done 10K ago, and I've been changing my oil. Whats happening? Is my driving making that big of a difference in my mileage? Or do I need a new fuel filter, or maybe clean my K&N filter? Any tips?

Do a forum search on gas mileage... this has been asked about many times before. There is no straight forward answer, as there could be many causes that you'll have to look into...

yeah, search. but it could be any one of these or a combination of them:

lead-foot
dirty fuel filter
tire pressure
using lower grade gas
and plenty more...

search for it!

DONT BUY CRAP GAS!!!

never buy from racetrack, QT etc... only go with mobile, fina, exxon, chevron or texaco. my mpg went down to about that when i bought racetrack gas. filled up with chevron and im back to 350-400 a tank.

i fill up exxon premium most of the time, and i get high 300s to around 400...except for this last tank, where i left my car running for about an hour and a half while sitting in it listenin to the radio and runnin the A/C...so i'm gonna get low 300s on this tank

Even with a lead foot driving at 100 miles an hour very very often... i can still manage 250 miles to a tank.

i'm guessing it's winter gas? someone mentionned it's different i think?

i'm going to check fuel filter, and other stuff this summer. But for now i must live with an avg 220-270 miles to a tank...

for some reason my normal driving also gets me around 250 miles to a tank... during the week when i'm actually only going to work and back home again... all stop and go and city type driving...

I changed my 11 month, 12K mile old Mobil One Oil, Nissan oil filter, and my cone air filter. The month before my change I was getting 22 MPG. Now the last two tanks are back up to 27 MPG. Both are mixed city and freeway driving. I have 53K miles on my 97 and have everything ready for my 60K tune-up.

One thing I suggest is to take your car down to the dealer or any Nissan shop and ask to run the CONSULT tool to scan for any problems or abmormalities. I think this month is car care month and the local Nissan dealerships are giving free 121 point inspections. I'm going to take them up on their offer.

How are you guys getting mpg? xxx miles/15 or xxx miles over 18? Cause I can't really get an accurate read ever.

You fill up your gas tank, reset the trip odometer, and do your normal driving. When you need to or want to fill up again, go back to the same station (same pump if you like) and fill up the gas tank. On the receipt and on the pump will be the number of gallons it took to fill up the tank. This is roughly the number of gallons you used to achieve the number of miles you drove. Take the number of miles you drove and divide it by the number of gallons you pumped. Hence miles per gallon. You can't use 15 gallons or 18 gallons as your denomintor unless it's the actual value consumed.
