Need Help with performance

OK, I was at some races around where I live. I raced this 2 door handa civic with exhaust and don't know what else he had for performance. He smoked me off the line and I could catch him. I had my 2 12inch subs in the truck. All I have is an intake for performance mods. Would a exhaust, y-pipe etc cure all that??
Call yall help out a maxima buddy and tell me what I would need to inhance my engine performance.
I was and still am very upset about that race.
I have a 96 auto !

i've heard that a y-pipe will give you around 15 hp ... i don't if that will solve your problem, but it might ... also next tiem you race you might want to take out the subs + box, becuase that tends to weigh a lot ... also if you have large rims they might be slowing you down

Actually it's not that unusual...

To get smoked by one of those, even though no other .Orgers will admit it. With an intake, full exhaust, and chip a 5spd Civic can easily keep up with an auto Max. Sounds to me though like you need to work on your reaction times. By 60MpH you are ahead of him though, right? Yes the Y-pipe will help a lot with performance, but it's more mid-range. Nothing can help low-range alot although a CAI can preserve it. Also check your knock sensor and see if it need to be replaced.

You have to check your ECU for error codes. Check the FAQs and do a search on how to.

A y-pipe will help, but you might consider taking out things that you really don't need. Also you might not want to race with a full tank of gas. Any thing less than 1/4 a tank is good. Maybe you need to give it a good tune-up. Have you changed the fuel filter, PCV or spark plugs. I know these are just little things, but they all add up.
