Alignment Q: do different wheels/tires matter?

Alignment Q: do different wheels/tires matter?
Ok,
I need to get an alignment since I lowered my car. I have the OEM 15" alloys on the car now with worn-out 225/60 15's. I have an almost brand-spankin' new set of 17" Katana K6's w/ 235/45-17's ready to replace them. I've waxed them and they're in flawless shape, so I'm thinking. . .I'd rather have the mechanic man-handle the old OEM alloys (instead of my shiny new wheels) when the alignment gets done. The overall diameter of these two different wheel/tire combos is pretty much the same (allowing for the diff. depths of the worn-out vs. new treads) and both wheels have a +40mm offset.
My question:
Is it OK to get the alignment done with the 15"s on the car and afterwards - swap the 17"s on myself? -or is there a specific reason why I should get the alignment done with my 17"s on there? I've seen that recommended, but I don't understand why. Would the alignment correction be any different on the same car with the only different variable being the wheels/tires? I can't see how, if the O.A.D. & offset remain the same, but maybe I'm missing something(?) Anyone who has technical knowledge on this, please sound off.
Thanks in advance.

I would suggest putting the new rims on there because if the offset or camber is different on the new rims it mind make you wind up having to get an aligment anyhow. Plus if your redoing everything might as well have it all on there to get everything matched together perfect.

your putting more width on the road that is hes trying to tell you, sideways not up and down, install your new wheels and take it to the alignment shop, is worth your while, and these are new tires as well.
