Questions about future SC
Questions about future SC
This might be a little early to ask this, but what the heck!!!
I would like to purchase a supercharger with the next year or two, but i have some question and concerns
1) I currently have 128k on my 96, Should I rebuild the engine before installing a SC?
2) The V2 SC is the "bad" one because they changed the pulley on it, please correct me if I am wrong, Does anyone make a different pulley for it that is more reliable?
3) What other "upgrades" should I get with the SC, ie...larger fuel pump, injectors, gauges. Things of that sort.
4) (related to #1)What would an average engine rebuild cost me?
5)What does an average SC install go for, I can do some things mechanically on my car but this is a little tougher
Thanks for the help, sorry for the long post and hopefully I don't get flamed for this.
I did search but nothing of value came up.

Supercharger answers
1) You don't need to rebuild your engine. Most likely your transmission will be the first failure. I have heard Maxima's running up to about 12lbs of boost and the engine has stayed intact, but the transmission is something tha needs to be addressed at these levels.
2) It's not a bad SC design or kit, it is just a bad pulley. There is a company that is making metal and steel pulleys that will replace the bad plastic pulley with the red center section. Other than that you have a great SC kit that will boost you for a long time.
3) larger fuel pump- Not necessary but it is always good to error on the side of safety. The one that you want is the WALBRO 255lph in tank fuel pump. The fuel pump is actually meant for a 2nd gen DSM & not the Maxima. This is the unit we all use. It will fit w/ no problems at all. If you order it from somewhere else its the Walbro GSS342 or the FPD006 for $113 from http://www.autoperformanceengineering.com/
Injectors- Stockers seem to handle everything that we have thrown at them and continues to take it. No need to upgrade at this time.
Gauges- Would be good to get boost, fuel pressure, and Exhaust Gas Temperature gauges
Other things that you might want to get are the following:
Transmission cooler (MT and AT cars)
Modified valve body (AT cars)
1 step cooler plugs (when using down to a 3.33 supercharger pulley)
2 step cooler plugs (when using a 3.25 and smaller supercharger pulley) and a smaller serpentine belt
4) Depends on what you want done and how deep you pockets are. My guess is that $2000 would be a good starting point.
5)I am guessing around $700-1000 for installation.

In addition to this stuff, what other items would someone want to consider before getting supercharged? Is there some maintenance items that would need to be checked, belts changed, etc? This would be especially helpful as a lot of our cars are starting to see some higher miles.
Regular maintenance items to check out
*Getting better spark plugs and gapping them accordingly based on how much HP you are adding.
*Check or change your current panel airfilter to a better flowing K&N conical, or Monsterflow (not sure who makes this- JWT maybe?). You will be using this where the stock SC airfilter goes on the passenger side of your car so you might want to consider whether or not you will be wanting to make a custom Cold Air Intake for it or not.
*Change your PVC valve- Simple to do and very cheap.
*Change your engine oil to Amisoil (lets your extend your changing intervals to like 15,000 or 25,000 miles to lessen the amount of oil you use as a consumer.
*Change to a high flow cat if you stock one has a lot of miles on it (stock cats are supposed to last for around 60,000 miles. Some people say they last for the life of your car, but I would change it anyway.
*Clean out your throttle body with throttle body cleaner.
*Tighten up your throttle cables to make sure they are tight and responsive and have little to no slack.
*Change out your transmission oil to something better- Redline or Amisoil.
Of course you will want to make sure you do the regular performance add on's before you put on the SC:
Y-pipe, high flow cat, cat-back exhaust.
That is as much as I can think of right now. I might have left something out though.

Re: Questions about future SC
Your a 5 speed you need no tranny cooler you cant cool the clutch fluid, you will need to upgrade your clutch if you have that many miles on it. You wont need the VB upgrade either thats for Autos. I would consider an alloy flywheel if your going to pay to get the clutch done. Since you have no need for a Auto Tranny oil cooler then you may consider getting an engine oil cooler. You can get a cheap universal oil cooler from jegs for about $95.00 or you can get the real nice one that stillen retails for about $3-$400.00. So you dont really have nothing to worry about but to upgrade the plastic pulleys that come with the V2 kit to metal and you should be good. Metal pullesy are made by Automotive specialties in Texas for $65 a piece or you can pay $90.00 for the better quality ones that danNY sells and they look pretty heavy duty. I had no idea he was going to do that so I bought the ones that cost $65 a while back.
