Okay guys question: 89 vs. 97 Maxima's vs. 93 Mazda 626 vs. 96 Acura 3.2 tl

These guy's at my work are arguing with me about who would win:
My '97 Maxima SE vs. a '93 Mazda 626 Cronos vs. a '89 Maxima SE, vs. a '96 Acura 3.2TL. I'm asking everyone because but I don't know the exact specs of my '97 SE. I figure that the Mazda 626 isn't even in this equation, I should beat the 3rd gen. Max even though it' lighter and smaller, not sure about the Acura though. Well, what is everyone's un-biased opinion. I win right?

You should win without a problem, the closest car would be the 3.2Tl to you.

six two six

I think the Acura TL should win that one.

I used to drive a 1993 Mazda 626 V6 ES.. When it was brand new, that thing was extremely fast. It was much lighter than my Maxima and it felt much faster than the maxima (for some reason). I think the 93 626 only has 175-180hp in the V6, but the weight is less than the Maxima.

great responses guys keep em comming. I find it hard to believe that this mazda is that fast. I know it's lighter and smaller yes,but c'mon.....it's a mazda 626! I thought the 3rd gen Max would give a good show too, so I'm surprised so far

Well, i personally have a 97 max auto myself (but not for long) and i've driven the 3.2tl, i believe the TL will win definately but not by much. You'll be right on his tail or even half a car behind. The Tl will be behind and then at the end of 2nd gear, it will pull on u(vtec).

the 93 626 v6 had 164 hp and 170 tq, and is only about 100-200 lbs lighter than a maxima. given the same transmission, the maxima will own it.

you should beat every single car that you listed.

I have some experience for you on this one

I raced an auto 97 GLE Maxima versus a 96 TL. Both are bone stock. From 0 - 60, the Maxima won, no questions. It's lighter weight aided to a quick sprint from the start. From 60 mph - 120 mph, the TL will dominate. It walked past me pretty easily at those highway speeds. I imagine it would dominate from 40 mph on also. It's automatic transmission gearing is shorter than the Maximas too.

I'd say it would be a close race between the 89 and the 626, however I think the Maxima will prevail since the VG has 182 ft/lb of torque.

So knowone is giving my friends 89 a chance eh? That's funny because my brother has a 94 brougham edition maxima (same generation) with the same engine as my '97 se and damn that thing can FLY!! It's a 5 speed though.

you'll eat the other maxima alive...you'll beat the 626 and i thought the tl would beat u by a little but after hearing other guys response about running best 16 flat with it, you are going to win race all the way

I think that the TL will win.... if the maxima was a 5spd then it would be close between them.

Motor Trend Times

Just so you know your 97 max will win and you can disregaurd everyone elses unfound claims.

Motor Trend Test Results
Issue 9/95 96 Acura 3.2 TL 0-60 8.8; 1/4 16.7@86.3 in 4a
Issue 3/89 89 Maxima SE 0-60 8.9; 1/4 16.9@83 in 5m
Issue 1/93 93 Mazda 626 0-60 7.7; 1/4 16.0@87.8 in 5m
Issue 4/97 97 Maxima SE 0-60 7.1; 1/4 15.5@91 in 5m

Now all these car were tested in manual form except the acura which doesnt have a manual I presume, and the maxima is the fastest. I own a 95 and have yet to be beaten by any acura period NSX being the exception. I laugh at the Mazda 626. The 89 is not a good year for the max SE but having had owned a 92SE 5 speed I can almost gaurantee I loss sincec youre an automatic, but this is the 89 and your fine. I dont know why the 97 Max is slower than the 95 SE but it is according to MT. Also most of yall are mistaking the 96 for the 2000 Acura TL which is a 6.7 0-60 and a 15.2@93.1 in the 1/4 issue 6/00 or the Acura TL/S 6.3 0-60 and a 14.7@97.6 in the 1/4 issue 5/01.

HAve fun and you'll win. Dont worry about it.

Settle down Newbie and put your magazines away.

Just watch out for the TL from 75 on, it will dominate an auto VQ (which I was driving). My Dad pulled about 3 car lengths + on me up to about 110 mph or so. He walked on by. Right after that race was finished, we lined up and I completely dominated the TL from the start. We raced from 0 - 100 and he was never able to catch up, though, again he was gaining on me from 70 or so on. My parents own both of the above cars. I primarly drive the 91, which is similar to the 89. I think that I could take an auto 2.5 V6 from Mazda, but not the 5 speed (since I'm an auto).

You should win with no problem...I raced a 96 3.2 TL (the fastest car you mentioned besides the 4th gen max) with my Intrepid 3.5L (which is *supposed* to be a lot slower than an auto maxima)..from a rolling start of around 30km/h to 160km/h (100mph), and I took him by a car length.
