My friend is in 4 cylinder denial... he talks tons of trash about beating me in his 99 Civic 2DR.

I have just a K&N intake on my Maxima. He has a Civic with and intake and a Greddy. I am auto, he is 5spd. I mean, really, no contest in the 1/4 mile right? I keep telling him once he tries to go from 2nd to 3rd it's C-YA LATER...

civic?

I used to have 97 civic. It was peppy and hadled great, but I don't see one beating a max unless it is SC or TC. Two different worlds.

I've got the same problem

My friend says that a Civic Si could beat my 97 SE. All I have is a drop in K&N and he told me that his friends civic has an intake, he told me that I would get smoked. I don't know if I would win but I know I wouldn't get smoked. Anybody has a thought on this? Oh yeah I do have the slushbox.

Re: I've got the same problem

A Civic Si has a very good chance of beating a 97 SE Automatic. Unless you have some go fast toys and he is basicly stock. As for any other civic. HAHAHAH! No.. Not without a engine swap, happy juice, or forced induction. On motor. Nope. I toy with these civic hatches all the time. Usually they are smoked at launch.. =)

you guys should stop playing with these civic's
yes some of them will kick our ***** and yes some of them will be beaten easily. It all depends on what he has. stock vs stock? stock vs mod? mod vs stock? mod vs mod?
But i don't care..I don't race anyways

it depends on the driver..you should have a good chance of winning though. VTEC works best on the freeway not from a stand still.

I raced a 99 SI a few weeks back >>>>>>

and my car was sick and I still beat him, I have a 95 SE auto, he had a 99 Si 5 speed with AEM cold air intake and if I remember correctly a Mugen exhaust. My O2 sensor and knock sensor were bad triggering my CHECK ENGINE LIGHT on and I had my STOCK ecu installed instead of the JWT ECU. We raced from a dead stop to about 80-85 MPH and I had a great launch, I was ahead about 2-3 car lengths the whole way till he gave up. He said that he thought he would beat me, I told him he was lucky my car was sick and showed him that my check engine light was on and that I was just coming back from the auto parts store and had bought a new O2 sensor, showed him the O2 sensor too, also my timing was retarded to 5-8 dgrees instead of 15 degrees because of the bad knock sensor. He knew the Maxima was fast but never that fast. My only mods when I raced him was cone filter and Y-pipe. So YES with a good launch an AUTOMATIC MAXIMA will take a slightly modded Civic Si.

some answers

I'm talking about stock Civics driven by competent drivers, not the majority of nibblenuts behind the wheels of them annoying Hondas. ;-)

Si vs 4th gen auto

Si should edge out the Max. Sorry boys. Properly driven Si's do anywhere from mid 15's to high 15's. The thing about our low-torque Hondas are that launches are super important since you'll have to wait awhile before the torque peak. Heck, when I botch the launch in my low 15 second GS-R, I'll do 16's!

Bernie's friend with the EX 5-speed w/intake/exhaust vs his auto Max

It'll be close, although I expect the Max to edge it out. My CRX seems to be quite similar to Civic EX 5-speeds, and right now it's done 15.9's with I/H/E.

The Civic EX only has SOHC VTEC. Thats vtec only on the exhaust side. It does almost nothing for performance. It just improves fuel efficiency. The only factory civic you have to worry about is the Si. But if you have a few mods.. =) He's going to see maxima lights. And since you have an auto. Once you get a good launch.. You don't have much to worry about.. if you get a good launch. He will be playing catch up.. he has to row through the gears hard and fast. He can't just shift fast.. If you have a car length on him from the start.. he will have to shift extra fast.. And try to push the needle as close to the rev limiter as possible. Basicly.. he's gonna have plenty of chances to mess up.. =)

A Civic EX with intake and exhaust is sloooooooooooow.
16.7 to 17+ depending on the driver.
Trust me i know...i had one (96 EX 5-speed).
It actually went SLOWER w/ intake/exhaust.
My average times were 16.9.
But watch out if he goes turbo.
I was pullin' low 13's with a basic turbo kit (GReddy).

170hp/128lb torque. They are pretty damn fast. Especially on the highway. You should be able to keep up with one on the highway. But the 94+ integras have the B18C1 engine. DOHC VTEC. Meaning.. they have highend like crazy.

I raced my friend in his 5-speed 97 civic hatchback yesterday in CT. He has cold air intake and I have jwt intake. (my max is auto btw). It happened on a long straight road going a little bit up hill. We were rolling at 20-25 mph and then punched it. 3 seconds later I saw him in my rear view mirror, and soon he was far behind me. My friend is a very good driver but he was blaming the road which was going up hill.
Could this be a possible reason why he was THAT slow?

Yes, lack of torque. The civic isn't geared to make much torque through gearing and the engine makes none on its own. So its super slow going up hills..

civics are like matchbox cars, same as integras, the maxima is a mid size car, those cars rnt even in the same class as us there are no luxry in those cars they were built for economy, every civic i raced including si i beat, i raced a type r on the highway and beat him easy. i am looking for beemers now and forgeting about about hondas matchboxes.

Have you seen an Integra with full leather interior?? The leather is way way nicer than our maxima leather. As for racing a ITR on the highway and winning. A ITR with a good driver will destroy a auto maxima. And eventually walk all over a 5-speed maxima. As for racing bimmers. They are autobahn runners. Don't even bother playing with an experienced bimmer driver on the highway. Sorry.. At least not a 328/330/M3 <--- If you play with the last one, you're on crack. sorry. Once you go forced induction, the rules change. But while NA. We aren't exactly the top of the foodchain. Gotta give respect where respect is due.

u can have your opinions and thats fine zum but i know what i did so u can believe me if u want, i have seen a itr and i am not impressed like i said b4 they r in a diff class than our cars . by the way my father has a 98 528i and the power between his car and mine r very close ,i know i cant beat an m3 but for what i paid for my car and what a m3 costs he should beat me. same goes for the 540 . if i was going to spend over 40k i get a vette. and wave bye bye to everyone.

I don't know.. Really.. I had a friend who had an ITR. And there was no way I was going to catch him on the highway. No way. And all I had to do was keep the gas floored. My guess is that the ITR you raced didn't bother downshifting. Really. 195hp, 2600lbs. With higher gearing than the 5-speed maxima. That makes one fast highway runner. If you can beat a ITR on the highway. You can take out a 5-speed maxima. True, you can hunt 528s. But power to weight ratio.. you should be hunting the 3 series.

come on

All this talk, guys just go race 'em for yourselves, see what u can come up with. Bimmers are great cars..sure, if u got the money, u can beat some, some can beat u...jsut the way it works, u might get a 328 1 time, and then get slaughtered by a rx7...who knows, its jsut teh way it is. Don't keep asking people Like "do u think i can iwn" come on guys and gals, we all got an ego, go and prove it, and if u lose, sh_t they must got something nice under their hood. I guess what i am trying to say is race the cars, then post the results...=)
Enjoy the ride

Re: lol

I would believe that for the Civic Si. But not the ITR. Different beast. 195hp vs 160. The ITR engine is polished, with titanium pistons. Handbuilt. You can't compare a B18C5 to a B16A. Nope..

Bottom Bine: a stock, or n/a bolt-on modded Civic (I.E. no serious engine work) will NEVER hang with a Maxima. Not even the Si. I don't care if it gets 100hp/liter. whoo dee doo. The dinky thing only has just over half the torque of the VQ. That's what matters. By the time their all-conquering VTEC kicks in, the Maxima's long gone

Torque is nice...but when it peaks out at ~4K and drops rapidly nearing redline, it doesn't do any good. Horsepower is what wins races.

Yes, they are almost the same thing, but you have to remember that torque can be multiplied.

torque = (hp*rpm)/5252

Here's my bottom line, and it's a tad more accurate.

NA bolt on Civics, even the plain Jane D16 (SOHC VTEC), can hang and occasionally edge out stock 4th gen auto Maximas. A stock Si will edge out a stock 4th gen auto Maxima.

Beat one last night with a 95 se

(my friend was driving) Pulled upto light, next to me was a low sitting kid in a civic with body kit, intake, and who knows. anyway, light turns green, we're even for half of first gear mostly because my tires were skidding. hit second gear and pulled away for about 10 car lengths upto abou 70MPH. civic was no where to be found. JUst another example. This is my friends max, i got a 96 gti vr6.

Its all about the driver

I dont know why you guys are even discussing ex civics and si civics...they wont beat a max in a 1/4 mile or 0-60 stock or with a few bolt-ons. However, I think I could beat some max drivers with a stock ex civic. If you are a crappy shifter...which many people are and dont know it...then you will lose to a lot of cars that theoretically could never win. I remember my first race against a riced out civic ex. I had gotten the max 2 weeks before and I lost by a car length, it was because I sucked at shifting. And like many have said before...the cars are not compatible. A GSR and a ITR will beat a stock maxima, stick or not...it doesnt matter what you guys "claim". I've driven both cars and they are on a different level of driving than the max. A 328i in stick will barely beat the stick max in a 1/4. IF you have an auto max and dont have a sc or nitrous...you are limited in all aspects of driving...sell the auto and get a 5 speed...its night and day in difference. Hell, I dont think that autos should even race at lights...its just silly.

Even if a SI stock runs mid 15's, looks like he'll give me a run for my money. :P I run mid 15's, that was my first time draggin ever. Not a pro like Adam. I didnt have beginners luck like Ant or Neel either. Just kidding guys. I have raced my friend with a 99 SI w/ 20k miles on it. He has a intake and it is dropped w/ Intrax springs. I have raced him on the highway, from stop lights to rolling starts. The only time i have ever lost to him was in high end where my gov kicks in. Im sorry but a stock Civic will NEVER i repeat NEVER beat a stock Max. Auto vs Auto and Stick vs Stick. I will leave on a positive note, Hondas area damn reliable and they hold up to abuse. THey jsut arent fast outta the box. It's a fact.

A GSR WON'T BEAT A 5SPEED MAX, 0-60 6.8 TO 7.0, 4GEN MAX 0-60 6.6 ,THE 2K ITR IS THE FASTEST MODEL 98 WAS SLOWER 1/4 15.2 TO 15.3,4GEN MAX 15.2, THAT WOULD BE A GOOD RACE

right back to the same quote

I am basing this on my races with teg gs-r's. I have raced against and in gs-r's and that is my experience. I have done 0-60's in my car and I can't get under 7 seconds with mostly stock equipment. But maybe I am not as good as others are at shifting as I might guess. I can tell one thing about tegs though...I love to drive their stick. It is so much nicer than the max's stock stick system. I think it all depends on the driver experience and other things...but honestly...if the gs-r can't beat the max then it sure can give it a run for its money (this is stock vs. stock). However, EX civics sould just stop with their boasting and taunting at the line. First of all look at their rear brakes....mmmmm...drums. Has anyone ever just played iwth the civic....you know...let them get like a few car lengths ahead of you and then blow right by them. It is sort of like when you are young and you think you basketball skills then all of sudden you get dunked on in front of all your friends. Ok, maybe that only makes sense to me.
