The sound of my exhaust.....

varies a bit and it's kind of a drag. I currently have a PR CAI, Cattman SS Y-pipe, RT cat, Stillen B-pipe, & the stock muffler with a 4" Bosal tip welded on (I thought it looked better than the stock tip and I wanted to keep my car quiet).

During acceleration, I am hearing more of the y-pipe than I want to. It sounds 'metallic' for lack of a better word, esp. when the car is cold. When the car is warm, sometimes (not all the time) the sound will go away and all I will hear is the CAI and the muffler. This is what I want ALL the time. However, most of the time the noise from the y-pipe persists. It doesn't sound good to me; it sounds like something is out of tune or the car is bogging down. I want my car to sound smooth and deep on acceleration and this noise from the y-pipe is taking away from that.

Do aftermarket exhaust tips change the sound of otherwise stock mufflers? Is there any way to silence the y-pipe other than coatings or wraps? Would the Apex'i WS catback help to smooth things out while keeping the exhaust sounding quiet and deep? Just looking for ideas/thoughts here...

Help...

i know what your talking about, unfortunatly i do not know the answer. but my y pipe is very loud when accelerating also, it does not overpower the CAI and catback, but it is still very loud till i get to around 3500 rpm. So all i can tell you is your not alone.

OK

Typically, after market exhaust tips dont do shat! Except add looks.

There is no way to silence the Y pipe other than wrapping the flex section.......and keeping stock exhaust(make sure you have no leaks in your exhaust anywhere!)

The Apex WS would make your car sound more aggressive than stock, so its not the answer.

When the car is cold it makes noise. There is nothing that can be done to stop it. Except moving to warmer climates.

Re: OK

I'm thinking of the Apex'i WS exhaust because it has a resonator and would maybe help me out a bit because I am now resonator-less with the Stillen pipe.

You're right in what you say and I understand all of it...I just wish there was a way to smooth out the y-pipe sound. I don't mind the loudness, I just want it to sound deep, not metal-like.

cattman is coming out with a cat-back exhaust for our 4th gen. in a few weeks, the 5th gen is due out this week or next, they are supposedly tuned for sound for use with the y-pipe..this is probably going to be the best solution for u, i think im going to get it as soon as it is available

I like the deep mustang exhaust sound...but I think it would be a bit odd in a Maxima. Is that what you mean?
