Transmission seals and bearings, add me to the list

Ok I am suspecting I have bad bearings on my '99 5spd. I just started having a moderate tranny leak coming from between the CV joint and the transmission. I checked to see if there was play in the axle and there is slight play, but it isn't as bad (3-5mm) as some people have spoken about. I took the car in to Courtesy and they said it was the seal. The service quote came up to ~$290 so I asked if it was covered under powertrain. Aparrantly the seals are covered under powertrain so the seal is being fixed now I mentioned the bad bearings and incorrect shims, but since there are no TSBs John said all they can fix is the seal for now. If I have the seal leak later on then he said they could check it out, but this new seal has a 12month/12k warranty on it.
I'm hoping if I do have bad bearings that the seal will leak again within the 12mo/12k warranty. Can anyone who has had the bearing/seal problems comment? I'm thinking that if the bearing is already on it's way out, that it should only continue to get worse and break the seal again within the next 12k. Any thoughts on the matter?

Edit: I only have 51k so I am covered under powertrain for a while. I know eric made a good thread with a poll, but we should make a list of people with failures so the service dept. doesn't think we're crazy. I'm sure there's very few people still under powertrain, but at least some people with extended warranties may benefit.

This is my field here. Yet another 5 speed tranny falls under leaky seals you are fortunate that you're still under powertrain. 2-3 MM of play is PLENTY. There should be ZERO play in the differential/axles.

http://members.aol.com/ericdwong/images/img000003.jpg is a picture of what busted differential bearings looks like, and as you can see it'll just be loose feeling- not 1/2" or play or such.

Tell them to examine your tranny oil, since they'll have to dump it anyway to change the seals. I guarentee you that theres traces of metal in there. I dunno if you'll be able to visually see it, but if you send it to blackstone or an equiv. lab they can confirm it.

I originally thought that my transmission was OK because I never had leaks. But when I opened it up to put in a Quaife, I found the bad news.

I would push them to do do the internal bearings cause I almost guarentee that is what is wrong. This will save you the pain in the butt of going back in and having your car out of commission (of course if they provide a good rental it might not be such a bad thing). If/when you get the bearing job done, MAKE SURE THEY RESHIM THE BEARINGS OR ELSE THE PROBLEM WILL HAPPEN AGAIN!! Also, see if they wil give you the old shims. Measure them with a micrometer and tell me what they are (there will be 2 of them). I would almost place money that they are the same size as the ones that I found in 2 of my transmissions (which were exactly the same).

I think I have the same problem with my max. I have alot of play in mine, probably 5mm. I'll fix this myself, but how much are these parts gonna cost me and what tools will I need?

I've got a 98 5spd with 80k on her....

Never noticed any oil on the floor but where should I check for these leaks and how can I tell how much play is in the shafts?

Thanks

Eric I've kept up with your threads and even looked up other threads relating to my problem. I will ask them to take a look at the tranny oil, but it's only been in there for ~5k since that's when I had my clutch replaced. How hard is it to change differential bearings in the first place? In the future I may take apart the tranny and cryo treat parts like you did to prevent future problems, fix the bearings, replace the shims, etc.
