Correct Amsoil for Manual Tranny

I’ve done the search thing and found about nothing or some conflicting results on this subject.

Which Amsoil product do I need to use for a 97SE manual tranny?
The Amsoil site has everything listed under Gear Oil. Is this correct?
Here’s what they have listed.

Series 2000 SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube
Series 2000 SAE 75W-140 Synthetic Gear Lube
SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube
SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube
SAE 85W-140 Synthetic Gear Lube
SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube (GL-4), MT-1
SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Marine Lower Unit Gear Lube (GL-4), MT-1

Not sure which to pick?

I figured one of the Amsoil
dealers here could help me on this one.

Thanks in advance,

Boo

I would personally stick with the 75W-90. Even in extreme cold and heat conditions this world has to offer, the incredible ability of AMSOIL gear lubes will ensure other components will fail before their oil does.

As for series 2000 or not, the 2000 is slightly better, and as such, is slightly more expensive. How is it better, just take a look at the technical properties that you can find at AMSOIL's website. I would personally recommend the non-2000, just because I believe regular changes with the non-2000 will be more than enough for the Maxima tranny. The 2000 definetly won't hurt, I just think it is unnecessary, especially since I believe in changing the gear oil every now and then.

the third one, the normal 75w-90. No real need to go with the Series2000 on a street car.

These two are the same oil, just marketed differently. It is what I use in mine. I've tried the 75W-90 and the 80W-90, and the 80W-90 shifts much smoother than the 75W-90 does. The 75W-90 meet GL2 through GL5 specs. The GL5 rating concerns me, as only a GL4 lube is specified for the Maxima.

Re: Re: Correct Amsoil for Manual Tranny

I noticed that when I put Redline in my tranny. The Nissan manual, if memory serves, specifies 80W90 GL-4. Since Redline MT-90 was 75W90 GL-4, I figured it was better than stock becuase of its slightly wider viscosity range, among other things.

So, the 80W90 synthetic Amsoil stuff shifts better?? I wonder how it performs in the cold, too.

Thanks for the help guys. I live in Houston so I shouldn't have
any problems with the 80w-90 when it comes to cold weather.
I ordered 2 AGT-1G - SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube (GL-4), MT-1. They didn't sell them in quarts so I had to buy two gallons (8 quarts). I believe the tranny uses about 4.5-4.8 quarts.

I'm in MA and I've had no issues with it in the cold. Technically speaking, the 75W-90 has a pour point of -45C and the 80W-90 pours at -33C. Nissan specifies the 80W-90 so I'm happy all around.

Boo,

For future reference, the AGT 80W-90 GL4 and the ALU 80W-90 Marine Lower Unit GL4 are exactly the same product. The only differences are the sticker on the bottle for marketing reasons and a slightly higher price. I bought a gallon of the 80W-90 and then the quart of the lower unit lube to make the total of five quarts.

I got the Amsoil in but they sent the wrong one. I originally ordered the 75w-90 on Monday morning then called back an hour later and changed the order to the 80w-90. So I guess they didn't update the original order. I'm not going to deal with shipping it back it's probably too much of a hassle. I'll just use the 75w-90 since it has been known to work great for our trannies.

On a positive note, it only took 2 days to arrive!!! Quick shipping.

I might get to putting it in this weekend and let you all know how it feels!
