Cool job on the security light. I might try that later, it looks good.

By the way, doing the driver side door multi-color looks pretty cool too. I've changed mine twice now...

Originally had it red and blue, now it's red, blue, green, and yellow. None of the LEDs are very bright (made sure of that) so the color combination looks pretty cool.

Gonna get some pictures once I can afford film.

Which size led's did you buy? The same for the security and the switches?

for the windows i bought 3mm, 1500mcd blue LEDs, and for the security i bought one of the fake LED security loghts on ebay because it was already built to worht with a 12v system.

the write up is for the 95-96 maximas. you have a 98. how were you able to do it? i really want to do this mod, but i'm not sure how to do it on a 99... maybe a write up for the 97-99 perhaps?

Yeah...i am prob. going to just buy all the leds pre made for 12v, saves time I think in the long run. The switch LED's need be made to run off 12v also right?

no since the window switches are already leds, there are resistors in place, so you need to get leds that are between 3-5v, so make them work

Make sure you get between 3-5v, though. Anything else and you're likely to blow one of the LEDs and then you'll have to take everything apart again...

...not that I know from experience.

How do you know the correct voltage? Wouldn't they all be the same?

im refering to using LED's in other places in the car where LEDs where not originaly used , make sure you use the correct resistor, or you will blow the LEDs.

try serching for varad led's i think. If you want to use the Leds from eled.com(3mm or 5mm is fine) you will need to solder in the appropriate resistor.

You can do the front doors on 97-98 but not the rears. . . They changed the rears in those models to use a flat LED instead of ones that can be easily taken out in earlier models. I haven't looked at the 99's one but they could be different if they have the switches from a 2K. There are ways to do the rear but I don't think they are safe enough to prevent shorts. . .

Geo, you're the man, I have never seen anyone do their electronic climate control (ECC) buttons before. Do you have a how-to? Thanks.

yeah it is, but if you look at the led there is a reistor in the little housing that the LED is mounted to. As far as size its a 5mm and there is no way to find out the voltage, so just make your own resitor/led setup and that should be fine.

As for as a how to, check out the picture i made earlier and if i have some time i might write it up as well, but currently i dont have any.

If you have questons ill be glad to help

I don't know if I understand your question but if you have the security light holder out of the dash, all you do is unclip the housing to gain access to the insides. Once you have the housing apart pull the led along with its rubber socket off of the two forks (you'll know what I mean if you have it apart)You now have to unthread the led's leads from the little rubber holder. I think the resistor which is kinda embedded in the rubber holder is around 600 ohms. I relaced mine with a Radioshack led #276-316 and it works fine. Make sure you keep the resistor in there - it could be easy to lose. If when you put the rubber socket back on and the led doesn't light - remove the rubber socket and rotate it 180 degrees and reinstall it. Hope this helps.
GEO that's a nice write up on your A/C wiring job. I had done the same thing. I ended up removing the led's because they weren't bright enough. I ended up putting glass stain on the back sides of the buttons to get them to light up blue. Didn't work much better. I think I may reinstall led's, but I'm probably going to try to locate them directly behind the switches.
Since you seem electrically inclined I'd recommend you put leds in the switches cc/hazard/defroster/and dimmer. I did it in mine with the 276-311 and everyone loves them. You'll have to put a dropping resistor in but you know how to do that.

For those that are wondering about 97+ rear switches, here is the best info I have on where to wire things. . . If you have any questions it was submitted to me by maxximus75@excite.com (his member name wasn't listed in the email and I couldn't find a SN that matched any info I had). I haven't tried it myself so I don't know how it works or any issues resulting from it.

I alredy did the defroger and dimmer, but ended up buring the CC switch, but these are really hard to do because its very dificult to get the led and resistor to fit inside the housing. as for the hazard il going to leave it cause there is a red filter and it would look woierd if i put a blue led there(maybe a red one). I should be getting more LEDs next week so ill fix the one thats blown and change the once behind the radio and ill see what i can do for the guages.

Adidas_Boy thanks for that pic i have to take a look at my rear switches and see if i can do it up.

this is a picture of the dimmer install, sorry for the quality.

I am wondering if anything of this sort can be done the climate control switches that seem to be different on the 98 year.

My hazard switch on my 95 SE should be just like yours. One light behind the white triangle emblem surrounded by red on the front of the switch. The white section is the part that illuminates. There is no red filter on mine and I don't where you would have one on yours. The white can light up whatever color you want.

Re: Re: Re: Security Light?

would you be interested in doing mine for a nominal fee? i could send you the defrost button, hazard button, AC unit, dimmer, cruise control, security, door switches, and anything else you can come up with and you could wire up RED led's in those places for me.. i will pay for shipping of course both ways and then whatever the cost of the LED's plus your time. i emailed you, no response.

I might have deleted it by accedent i get alot of junk mail, so sorry for not responding. the only problem is that i have finals comming up and since im graduating i need to spend some extra time on school, however if you like as soon as i get done with school, i can defenetly wire all these up for you. I also would like to get all the other lights done in my car first so that i know exactly what im doing. so give me a couple of weeks and email me(i wont miss this one) and well talk to see what we can do. In the mean time ill see if i can find some red LED's for you.

So let me get this straight. If i want to replace the stock greenish lights in my windows buttons and lock buttons on both the driver and passenger doors, i can't just replace the leds, i would have to have them re-sodered on? Is that correct. I have a 1998 Maxima

Yes you would have to resolder new LEDs into the passenger and driver side. . . It makes it so that they don't fall out and create shorts, but the step are the same as 95-96. As for the rear switches, they are a little bit more difficult and you have to wire things as the picture in this thread indicates, leaving the stock LED in place.

i must say the window switches were a very easy mod to perform...
something most people here can do. Even if your afraid of useing a soldering gun...

I practiced for about 10 minutes on a cheap electronics board i had lying around, then said screw it and did the real thing.

I'll probably start working at the center console sometime this summer.

Just damn LEDS! freaking expensive for blues.

RED/GREEN! damnit those are cheap!

...... but blue looks very nice.

YOu think blues are expensive, try purple. . . If you can find them they are $10/LED. . . It is the fact that Red/Green are easy to produce and have been around for years. . . Blue is still very new and quality control problems were prevalient up til about a year and a half ago.

What are blues going for?

Also, would the same size lights for the window buttons work for the AC light, and the air flow direction lights? Cuz those are green as well. Good thing there is only 1 button on the passenger side

If i make this change to my window button colors, is it recommended to do the rears? I won't really be showing off to anyone, just for my own satisfaction.

Did you use the brighter LEDs? I used the 300 mcd LEDs and I'm gonna switch to the 2600 when I get the time.
