. . . I don't know if any cars have a switch there stock. . . Could be wrong though.
the switch for dimming the lights is a little dial either on the instrument penel or right below it...i cant remember. the area is not a button, but rather just an area Nissan left for aftermarket additions, like the poeple above have done. as far as i know, it has no original purpose.

~9 responces and only one that answered the question and was correct (njmax).
Anyway, it is the traction control for certain Maxes and it is also the fuel door release for certain I30s.

Does the traction control work pretty well? I live out in Colorado - we don't get the snow that you do, but every once in awhile we'll get a crazy blizzard. I ask because I'm looking to buy a 97-99 Max (5 speed, of course) and am not sure which options are worthwhile. Thanks!
I don't think traction control was available with 5 speeds in the 4th gen

Traction control was not offered in 95. I have a 95 GLE and have the exact same thing. How do you explain that?
It is just an empty pop-out that people normally use for aftermarket add-ons.
The traction control was put in that spot later years due to the fact that it was left empty before (convinience). The car design back in 95 did not have this as an option, so therefore I doubt very seriously that the engineers were thinking that far ahead.

.
I bet the button is for traction control, but maybe it wasn't available on US models. In my mom's 93 camry, there is a button cover (next to 2 other buttons) on the right of the steering column that serves no purpose - my mom's car was fully decked out. I found out years later that it was for heated seats, an option that was available on Canadian cars, since the US and CAN cars were built at the same US plant.
