If you want quiet operation go back to a factory stock exhaust system. Don't install a 2000 Maxima exhaust system, because
- It won't fit right (2000 Maxima has a longer wheelbase).
- Your Engine Control Module lacks the capability of operating the active muffler.

Are you saying the valve in the 2k muffler has a sensor controller by the ecu?

Re: Are you saying the valve in the 2k muffler has a sensor controller by the ecu?

You have it almost right. A sensor is something which sends a signal to the Engine Control Module (example: the Oxygen Sensor). An actuator is something which receives a signal from the ECM and acts in response to it (example: the fuel injectors).

The 2000 Maxima has an active muffler. It has a special valve which is closed at low RPMs and open at high RPM. For more information, go to the Nissan-USA site:

and click on Performance.

So it's electronically controlled and not by pressure?

Re: So it's electronically controlled and not by pressure?

I must admit, I don't really know. After reading about it, I assumed it was electronically controlled...

- Mr. Martin, I thought that the "active muffler" was operated based upon exhaust pressure opening up a second valve, not the ECU. Is the system electrical in nature?

Quite honestly, I believe it's by pressure

because there are no wires hanging out of the muffler.

Pretty much any aftermarket exhaust will be loud with the Y-pipe. Putting on the stock exhaust is the only way to quiet it down

I read on the I30 when it came out that it's electronically controller!
