need new brakes.

The dealer wants 85 for labor and I provide my own brakes. The OEM. He said he will provide the brake pads and do everything for 140. He uses the akebono pads. I was wondering how much you guys got your breaks done for so I won't get ripped off those !@#!@%@ Mechanics. THanks

Also wondering how much you guyz paid to get your shock and springs installed.

I paid $130 at my Nissan dealer to have my front rotors resurfaced, pads changed, and internals inspected. It may seem like a lot but to me it was worth it. My car stops like it did when new (notice I didn't say it stopped well but as new ) and no squealing anymore. I went home and painted the front and rear calipers VHT aluminium and now it's like I have a whole new brake system.

get axxis pads - a regular mechanic will prolly charge you about 50-70 bucks for the labor

GREAT NEWS!!!

GREAT NEWS MAN, I GOT FOUR ROTORS FOR YOU. THEY ARE DRILLED AND SLOTTED. JUST GO BUY SOME CHEAP LIFETIME WARANTY BRAKES. AND THEY WILL DO JUST FINE. THE MAIN THING YOU BRAKE SYSTEM ARE THOSE KIND OF ROTORS. YOU WILL INCREASE YOUR BRAKING. I BOUGHT THEM ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO FOR MY '99 MAXIMA SE 5-SPEED, BUT I TRADE IT IN BEFORE I PUT THE ROTORS ON. SO, IF YOU WANT IT EMAIL ME AT

Re: need new brakes.

sound about right. i'd go with the oem pads unless you do sprited driving and need additional stopping power. also, they don't squeal.

Actually, if you're at all mechanically inclined, have all the right parts, a decent tool kit, torque wrench and shop manual, a front brake pad swap can be done rather easily. I think that was the essence of his comment.

I've done successful brake jobs on about 5 different cars, imports & domestics as a D.I.Y. mechanic. (Just did Brembo slotted rotors, Porterfield Carbon Kevlar pads, stainless-steel braided lines, Speed-Bleeders and painted all calipers off the car recently).

Having said that, if you haven't got a proven track record of mechanical accomplishment, or a friend who has done brakes before (& who knows their azz from their elbow) to assist you, then brakes probably aren't the safest place to cut your teeth, D.I.Y. speaking.

Labor rates vary regionally: a front brake job w/ rotor resurfacing in my area runs about $145-165 w/ garden variety parts store pads.

Good luck!

New Brakes - 'Disc quiet caution

Hello,

I have had one funny experience. I used Raybestos PG Plus pads on my front brakes and did the job myself (following Haynes instructions faithfully).

I used Disc Brake Quite stop (the red stuff) as indicated in the manual, and the original brake shims.

My brakes do squeal a lil bit, but after this install, I had this problem of a squeak being heard every time I was at steady speeds and took a slight turn (like the normal meandering on freeways). This squeaking sound used to persist for a while, and would go away if I lightly tapped my brakes.

So, obviously, my pads were touching the discs ever so slightly.

I opened front brake assembly (this condition persisted for 6 months, and one day I decided to overcome my lethargy), removed the brake pads and got rid of the quite stop goop (the red stuff).

The squeaking noise has gone away (sqeaking noise that used to come whle the brakes were not applied ). The brakes still squeal when applied, but not too badly, but the squeaks during highway driving are gone.

Something to consider:

This could be as much a function of some of the pad material wearing away enough (through normal wear) so that there is less likelihood that the pads will "drag" as anything to do with the "red stuff."

I just did my brakes (same as you) w/ Haynes & the red stuff & haven't had any problems yet. (Keeping my fingers crossed)
