Whats the best way to add torque for a quick jump at the start. what mods can do this??

A Y pipe and/or JWT/UPRD ECU. But since you have a 98 maxima I don't think you can upgrade the ECU .

 

Camshafts with a different profile will develop more torque, especially at low RPMs. However, there is no free lunch. Those cams will result in less horsepower at high RPMs. Now you can see the beauty of variable valve timing... you get the best of both worlds.

There have been various designs which provide variable valve timing. One of these was the VTC feature of the VE30DE Double OverHead Cam engine used in the '92 - '94 Maxima SE models. Unfortunately, the VTC mechanism on those engines was troublesome.

For many years all engines had a points-and-condenser distributor as the heart of the ignition system. Distributors have been replaced by electronics. Someday camshafts will be replaced by solenoids which open engine valves. The Engine Control Module (the computer) will control the solenoids, just as it already controls the ignition system and fuel injection system. This will provide lighter more reliable engines (no timing belt/chain, no camshafts). It will also provide ideal valve timing, better than any of today's mechanical compromises.

Solenoid-actuated valve trains are under development right now. They won't appear on production vehicles for a few years because they require more electric power than conventional 12 volt automotive systems can deliver. Future autos will probably have 42 volt systems.
