High Idle

Hey everyone :P I hope someone can help me.
My Maxima has been idling high at like 1500 rpm after I drive on freeway or drive for a long period of time at like one sustained speed. Its reallt strange. I stop at lights and I usally put car in neutral while I wait for lights to change. But I see the idle rise straight to 1500RMP or even when I go to Park before I swich car off it does same. But If I turn car off and then back on again its all fine..... Its strange!!??!! Does anyone know what it might be?? Please help me so I can book into get fixed. Has this happen to anyone else????

Your idle air control valve may be sticking. You can take it apart and clean it as well as the throttle body.

Also is your throttle cable binding? If the spring on the throttle in good shape and strong enough to close the throttle plate when you let go of the gas?

Throttle body cleaned.....

Hi I got the throtle body cleaned and also the Consult Nissan computer checker to check my cars computer. No fault codes found but the car is still idling high after sustained driving???? Nissan said it may be the idle control valve. I wonder how much they cost? Is there anyway to pull it apart and check or clean?? How is this done?

throtlr body clean still high idle

How do I adjust the throtle body. I just clean mine, when in park it idles around 900 to 1000. I just had a major tune up about 5 months ago. Air filter is clean, he only thing i need to do is change my knock sensor.

thanks.

just disassemble it. there are three bolts, in triangular fashion. once you get it off the car, you may hook it up to 12v dc current to see if winds or not. test with voltage AFTER you clean it. Spray TB cleaner all over the parts and into the openings and remove dirt with a towel. spray and clean it up nicely, then apply voltage to see if it winds. if not, you'll need a new one. not too hard to clean at all.

as for idle adjustment, remove the TPS connector, and THEN adjust the idle with teh idle screw. there is a website somewhere with pictures, try searching to find it. good luck

I cleaned my IAC or Idle Air Control valve and it corrected my idle problem. I used a tooth brush and carb cleaner to get rid of all the carbon. Didn't have to change the idle adjustment at all. Before cleaning my Max was stalling due to low idle when she was hot. Now, she idles at approximately 600 RPM with no problem. I think the IAC should be cleaned when cleaning the throttle body. Thanks to Stillen I30.

It's silly to switch to neutral at red lights if you have an automatic. That just puts extra wear on the transmission. What's the point?

Clean the IACV? Haynes manual specifically states that no "liquid" should be used as this is an electrical component and it may cause damage. How is that you state it can be taken apart and cleaned with TB Carb cleaner?

I had the same issue, I clean the Throttle Body, checked the IACV, and checked just about everything else the Haynes manual recommended. My idle was still high.

Then someone recommended cleaning my air filter, I have a CAI and the filter was VERY dirty. After cleaning that my idle was normal, and has been for the past few months.

So before you check your IACV, clean your air filter (or replace it which ever you need to do). Since this is much easier then removing the IACV, I would do this first and if it doesn't solve your problem then check the IACV.

is it safe to spray throttle body/carb cleane on the TPS??

I just cleaned my IACV, throttle body, and EGR port in the Upper Intake Manifold…. The IACV is pretty darn clean, but afraid I sprayed the TPS solenoid causing a 1500+rpm just like the original post here.

The IACV cleanup is related to the high idle.

There is a procedure which needs to be done to reset idle. It involves removing a plug as I recall.

hopefully a helpful member will tell you what to do.

You haven't caused any trouble for yourself.

I cleaned all that stuff years ago. I've forgotten what I did to reset idle.
