poor gas mileage

My 1998 GLE does not get good gas mileage. I bought the car last year used with 50,000 miles on it. I've replaced the air filter and check the tire pressure regularly.

I'm getting 18 mpg in city and only 24 mpg on highway.

Any suggestions? Feel free to email me with your suggestions.

the same thing happened to me on my 99, i was getting an average of 24 between city andhighway and then one day it dropped from 370 miles to a full tank to 280...My dad is the engine guy and i am the body modifications freak so he took care of it and showed me my "gas filter" which was this removable rectangular vent looking thing was completly, well80% clogged. (your better off asking someone else what it was) He replaced it and I am back up to 380 miles a tank. I know its pathetic but I don't know how many gallons my gas tank is so you can do the math for yourself. When ever I fill it up I divide the mileage by the gallons and whatever. I don't know...try the filter thing it was really CHEAP!

You're description sounds like the "air filter"?

Check your gas filter anyhow since it can lead to the same problems.

It could not be the air filter because it was gunked up with goo crap that didn't look like air was passing through it..but hey
I could be wrong...but then why would my dad call it a gas filter whatever. I know he knows his stuff?

thanks

how bout this: I'll replace the air filter and the fuel filter. It's worth $20 to see. I might even splurge and get a tune up.
