Starter Problem

Just took my car (96 GXE) to the local dealership because at times I have been hearing a grinding noise (in the starter) after it had started up. I was told I need to replace the starter because the bendix is shot. They will charge me $500. Does this sound high or is it me?

Depends
I think the are charging you about 300 for a new starter and 200 labor, which is high.
Really get a remanufactered starter from 125-150 and pay about 50-60 labour. It should be about 200 or so to change the starter. I would never pay 500.
By the way there is only about 6 month warranty on a new starter.
good luck
if you were in new york i could help you

PartsAmerica.com is a good site for getting parts prices. They list remanufactured starters for your Maxima ranging in price from $140 (Brand X) to $360 (Bosch). The $140 unit has a Limited Lifetime Replacement warranty.
Replacing a starter is not a difficult job. It does not require special tools, and you don't have to crawl under the car. If you like to do your own "wrenching" you might want to tackle it yourself. If you prefer to pay a professional, perhaps you can find a good independent shop. In general, independent operators charge less than dealers. You might find a former Nissan dealer technician who opened his own business. That's a good man to know!

it should be just a 1 hour labor
I had nissan replaced mine...it is the starter component that is expensive...if I have to do it again...I'll do it myself....
I hope it does not die on me anytime soon though....got it replaced last may...

You might as well replace it, just so you don't get stranded. Apparently, all starters on '95s will die before 90K miles.
